The Enoch Pratt Free Library is the public library system of Baltimore, Maryland.

Its establishment began on January 21, 1882 when philanthropist Enoch Pratt offered a gift of a central library, four branch libraries and a financial endowment of US $ 1, 058, 333 to Mayor William Pinkney Whyte and the City Council.

Benedict Leonard Calvert's portrait, along with those of the other Barons Baltimore, still hangs today in the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, the city that bears his family name.

It was founded in 1886 by Memphis entrepreneur, Enoch Ensley, as a new industrial city on the outskirts of a rapidly developing Birmingham ( then just 15 years old ) and directly adjacent to the Pratt coal seam.

Enoch Pratt clerked in a Boston hardware firm before moving to Baltimore in 1831 to launch his own wholesale hardware business on South Charles Street.

In January 1882 construction began of an imposing white marble structure on Baltimore's Mulberry Street that opened five years later as the Enoch Pratt Free Circulating Library.

Pratt, upon his death in 1896 at his summer residence Tivoli, stipulated that his bequest be used to complete construction of the Sheppard Asylum, enlarge the facility to house 200 additional patients, serve the indigent, and that the name of the institution be changed to The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital.

All of his conditions were met and The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital remains in operation today as the hospital component of the behavioral health provider, Sheppard Pratt Health System.

Edward McLean died of a heart attack at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in Towson, Maryland, in 1941.

Moses Sheppard ( 1771-1857 ) was a Baltimore businessman, a Friend ( Quaker ), a philanthropist, and founder of the now Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital.

As one example of such parallels, Moses 6: 31 calls the 65 year-old Enoch a " lad " ( the only use of this term in LDS scripture ), corresponding to the somewhat puzzling use of this term to describe Enoch / Metatron in, e. g., 2 Enoch 10: 4 and 3 Enoch 3: 2, 4: 2, and 4: 10.

As a " presiding angel of Hell ," he is said to punish nations with a whip made of fire, although, along with the other angels of punishment, is reported in Second Book of Enoch 10: 3 to dwell in the third heaven.

These are first construed as angels in one of the Dead Sea scrolls ( 4Q405 ), and as a class of celestial beings in late sections of the Book of Enoch ( 61: 10, 71: 7 ) where with the Cherubim and Seraphim they never sleep, but guard the throne of God.
