Ross Island features four principal volcanoes: Mounts Erebus, Terror, Bird, and Terra Nova.

It is little known even in the mountaineering world compared to the far more famous Mount Erebus, the second highest Antarctic volcano which is located near the U. S. and New Zealand bases on Ross Island.

The ancient Greek poet Hesiod has in his account of the birth of the gods and creation of the world ( i. e., in his Theogony ) that Chaos begot the primordial deities: Eros, Gaia ( Earth ) and Tartarus, who begot Erebus ( Darkness ) and Nyx ( Night ), and Plato echoes this genealogy in the Timaeus 40e, 41e where the familiar Titan and Olympian gods are sired by Heaven and Earth.

In Greek mythology, Erebus (), also Erebos (, " deep darkness, shadow "), was often conceived as a primordial deity, representing the personification of darkness ; for instance, Hesiod's Theogony places him as one of the first five beings to come into existence from Chaos.
