According to the saga of Erik the Red, when Erik was exiled from Iceland he sailed west and pioneered Greenland.

In the other version of the story, Eiríks saga rauða or the Saga of Erik the Red, Leif Ericsson accidentally discovers the new land when travelling from Norway back to Greenland after a visit to his overlord, King Olaf Tryggvason, who commissions him to spread Christianity in the colony.

The name Greenland ( Grænland in Old Norse and modern Icelandic, Grønland in modern Danish and Norwegian ) has its roots in this colonization and is attributed to Erik the Red ( the modern Inuit call it Kalaallit Nunaat, meaning " Land of the Kalaallit ( Greenlanders )").

Erik Thorvaldsson (; 950 – c. 1003 ), known as Erik the Red (), is remembered in medieval and Icelandic saga sources as having founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland.

The medieval Icelandic tradition relates that Erik the Red and his wife Þjóðhildr ( Thjodhildr ) had four children: a daughter, Freydís, and three sons, the explorer Leif Eiríksson, Þorvaldr ( Thorvald ) and Þorsteinn ( Thorstein ).
