Neuroscientists, Paul Eslinger and Antonio Damasio researched the effects of damage to the orbitofrontal cortex by using their patient, E. V. R.

What Damasio and Eslinger found was that the subject ’ s responses to social situations, moral reasoning and intelligence was superior, but he could not easily make decisions or meet his personal and professional responsibilities.

Along with Eslinger and Damasio ’ s experiment on patient E. V. R., Carlyle Jacobsen and John Fulton also experimented on chimpanzees involving the removal of the tissue from the frontal lobe ,< ref >" Lobotomy ".

According to Damasio, decision-making regions of the brain are connected to the emotional centers, even after damage to the frontal lobe, a theory he tested on a subject referred to as E. V. R., who also had frontal lobe damage, specifically bilateral damage to his orbitofrontal cortices during removal of a brain tumor.

The work is based on a poetic description written for the composer of the evolution of brain into mind by neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, and featured, at the premiere, a film of brain scans provided by Hanna Damasio plus other images, coordinated with the music during the performance.

That neuropsychologists have only recently taken a closer look at the crucial role the SMA plays in the volitional process might be seen, according to Antonio R. Antonio Damasio studied what ensued when something " severed ties between the lower centres of the emotional brain ... and the thinking abilities of the neocortex ".

Emotions, as defined by Damasio, are changes in both body and brain states in response to different stimuli.
