Aspects of his work on the studies of anatomy, light and the landscape were assembled for publication by his pupil Francesco Melzi and eventually published as Treatise on Painting by Leonardo da Vinci in France and Italy in 1651 and Germany in 1724, with engravings based upon drawings by the Classical painter Nicholas Poussin.

Painting and study
In 1904 the artist and writer Wynford Dewhurst wrote the first important study of the French painters published in English, Impressionist Painting: its genesis and development, which did much to popularize Impressionism in Great Britain.
De pictura (" On Painting ") contained the first scientific study of perspective.
The later ' Forbes School of Painting ', founded by Stanhope Forbes and his wife Elizabeth in 1899, promoted the study of figure painting.

Kanō Einō's History of Japanese Painting ( Honchogashi ), a 17th century source, contains a well-known anecdote about the young Sesshū: apparently the future painter did not study Zen with enough dedication, preferring instead to spend his time drawing.
