Although Paul approached the Gibson Guitar Corporation with his idea of a solid body electric guitar, they showed no interest until Fender began marketing its Esquire which later had a second pick-up added and became known as the Telecaster.

From an early age, Fender showed an interest in tinkering with electronics.

Percy Fender, covering the tour as a journalist, believed that Jardine never had the chance to play a normal innings in the Test, having to provide the stability to the batting, and often seeming to come out to bat in a crisis.

Percy Fender believed that Jardine was the only batsman in the side who could have coped with the difficult conditions.

Fender was supportive of Jardine and happy to play under him.

Percy Fender was one of many cricketers who noticed, and he discussed this with Jardine in 1932.

In a letter, Jardine told Fender that his information about the Australian batting technique was correct and that it meant he was having to move more and more fielders onto the leg side.

In his Wisden obituary, Jardine was described as one of England's best captains, while Jack Hobbs rated him the second best captain after Percy Fender.

The club captain for much of this period was the affable and bohemian Percy Fender, whose closest colleague was the England captain of Bodyline fame ( or infamy ), Douglas Jardine.

Fender soon passed this information on to Douglas Jardine, who was later named England captain for the MCC tour of 1932 – 33.

Fender later insisted that his role was minor in creating the tactic, but he was close to Jardine and Arthur Carr, who discussed the plans before the tour began, and other writers suggested that the original idea was his.

In addition, Jardine wrote during the tour to inform Fender that much of his information had been correct and that he was adapting his tactics accordingly.

Fender offered early in 1931 to resign the Surrey captaincy in favour of Jardine to increase his experience of captaincy before assuming the England role, but Surrey declined.

Consequently, Fender was sacked in January 1932 and replaced with Jardine, a move which had been rumoured in the press for some time and which was leaked shortly afterwards.

The club then released a statement which said Fender would only stand down if a suitable replacement could be found, before Jardine was officially appointed in March.
