Two F-16 fighter jets from the 121st Fighter Squadron of the D. C. Air National Guard were scrambled and ordered to intercept Flight 93 ; the pilots intended to ram it since they did not have time to arm the jets.

During the years 1953 to 1968, it was the home to 413, 427 and 434 Fighter Squadrons which flew F-86 Sabre jets, and 440 Squadron which flew CF-100 Canuck, then the CF-104 Starfighter.

He was subsequently assigned to Fighter Squadron 193 ( VF-193 ) based at Moffett Field, California, a night fighter unit flying Banshee jets.

The cover story of the May / June 1998 issue entitled Plain Crazy: The Joint Strike Fighter Story discussed the development of a new set of military fighter jets that could " blow a hole in the attempt to create a leaner Post-Cold War military.

Fighter jets were stationed there to protect Grand Coulee Dam to the north and the Hanford site to the south.

The 2010 parade saluted the men and women serving America throughout the world with a flyover at the beginning of the parade by four F-18 jets ( performed by pilots of the Fighting Redcocks of Strike Fighter Squadron 22 ( VFA-22 ) from the Naval Air Station at Lemoore, California ).

The main jets that entered the HAF fleet during this period were the F-104G Starfighter and later on, the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger ( in service 1969 – 1975 ) and the F-5 Freedom Fighter.

A full fledged Air Force Station is operational at Thanjavur which stations several Fighter ( aircraft ) including Sukhoi jets.

Fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the objects, which allegedly disappeared when the planes got close enough to engage, and reappeared when the jets disengaged.

( The same aircraft had been diverted by Grumman F-14 Tomcat Fighter jets of the U. S. Navy a month earlier, after the Achille Lauro hijacking on October 7.

During much of the Cold War, Clark Air Base's activity largely revolved around the 405th Fighter Wing which renumbered as the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing in September 1974 and its fleet of F-4 Phantom II fighter jets.

Fighter Command had only existed for 32 years, but in that time it had fought in the largest war in history and had progressed from biplanes to supersonic jets.

The next day, the largest formation of German jets ever seen, most likely from the Luftwaffe's specialist 7th Fighter Wing, Jagdgeschwader 7 Nowotny, made attacks on Eighth Air Force bomber formations over Dresden and the oil targets at Essen, shooting down a total of three bombers.

In July 1999, the 522nd Fighter Squadron deployed to Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland, to support NATO exercise Coronet Norsemen.

Warsaw pact rhetoric called these " wars of national liberation " and NATO allied rhetoric called these " Anti-communism " or " Freedom Fighter " wars.

Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 ( VMFT-401 ) is a Marine Air Reserve squadron also based at MCAS Yuma, containing both active duty and Selected Marine Corps Reservists, providing aerial adversary / aggressor services and dissimilar air combat training ( DACT ) for all US military services and selected NATO, Allied and Coalition partners.

* August 19 – Two United States Navy F-14 Tomcats of Fighter Squadron 41 ( VF-41 ) aboard the aircraft carrier shoot down two Sukhoi Su-22s ( NATO reporting name " Fitter ") of the Libyan Air Force over the Gulf of Sidra 60 nautical miles ( 111 km ) off the coast of Libya using AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.

* January 4 – Two United States Navy F-14 Tomcats of Fighter Squadron 32 ( VF-32 ) aboard the aircraft carrier shoot down two Libyan Air Force Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23s ( NATO reporting name " Flogger ") off the coast of Libya using AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.

The NATO Light Weight Strike Fighter competition of the early 1950s led to designs such as the French SNCASE Baroudeur, Breguet Taon and Dassault Étendard VI, the Italian Aeritalia G. 91 and Aerfer Ariete ( derived from the Aerfer Sagittario 2 ) and the US Northrop N-156 ( which became the F-5 ).

* February 6 – Two U. S. Air Force F-15C Eagles of the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing use AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles to shoot down four Iraqi Air Force aircraft – two Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21s ( NATO reporting name " Fishbed ") and two Sukhoi Su-25s ( NATO reporting name " Frogfoot ") – fleeing to Iran at an altitude of about 100 feet ( 30 m ).

* February 7 – U. S. Air Force F-15C Eagles use AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missiles to shoot down three Iraqi Air Force Sukhoi Su-22s ( NATO reporting name " Fitter ") flying to Iran, as well as an Iraqi Mil Mi-24 ( NATO reporting name " Hind ") helicopter in northern Iraq ; a U. S. Navy F-14A Tomcat of Fighter Squadron 1 uses an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile to down an Iraqi Mil Mi-8 ( NATO reporting name " Hip ") helicopter ; and a U. S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II of the 926th Tactical Fighter Group uses 30-mm cannon fire to shoot down an Iraqi Bo 105 helicopter.

* March 20 – A U. S. Air Force F-15C Eagle of the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing uses an AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile to shoot down an Iraqi Air Force Sukhoi Su-22 ( NATO reporting name " Fitter ") which is violating the post-Gulf War Coalition prohibition against Iraqi military flights.

NATO is an Atlanticist organization, and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is an Atlanticist project.

On 1 October 1971, the 492d Tactical Fighter Squadron stood down from its NATO commitments, followed by the 493d on 1 December and the 494th on 1 February 1972.

The 363rd Fighter Wing was inactivated at Shaw AFB on 31 December 1993, and the next day, 1 January 1994, the 20th Fighter Wing inactivated at RAF Upper Heyford and reactivated without personnel or equipment at Shaw AFB, returning to the base it had left for duty with NATO forty-one years earlier.

In 1951, the station was transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force to become the temporary home of 1 Fighter Wing, the first Canadian NATO base in Europe.

The 1st Fighter Wing simultaneously participated in the US homeland defense mission in Operation Noble Eagle ; maintained its lead wing status in the USAF's expeditionary air force ( AEF ) rotations to Southwest Asia, Turkey, enforcing UN no-fly zone sanctions in Operation Southern Watch Operation Northern Watch until 2003 ; and deployed fighters to Keflavík, Iceland to fulfill NATO treaty obligations.

Few members of the 1st Fighter Group foresaw subsequent difficulties in the summer of 1946 as they trained with their new jet fighters.

The team, dubbed the " Sabre Dancers ," was composed of five members of the 27th Fighter Squadron.

The term foo was borrowed from Bill Holman's Smokey Stover by a radar operator in the 415th Night Fighter Squadron, Donald J. Meiers, who it is agreed by most 415th members gave the foo fighters their name.

The building is a steel and marble structure, with wide sweeping steps leading up to a platform with columns holding up the memorial's sweeping roof ; on its back wall, etched in black marble, are the names of all members of the AVG, 75th Fighter Squadron, and 14th Air Force who died in China.

On 22 May 2002 a Joint Resolution was passed by the Congress of the United States recognizing the members of the 102d Fighter Wingfor their actions on 11 September 2001.

Less than 24 hours later, a C-130H landed at the air base with members of Louisiana ’ s 159th Fighter Wing.

* October 10 – United States Navy F-14 Tomcat fighters of Fighter Squadrons 74 and 103 from the aircraft carrier intercept an EgyptAir Boeing 737-200 flying from Egypt to Tunisia carrying members of the Palestinian Liberation Front who had hijacked the passenger ship MS Achille Lauro.

: Shaw AFB is a self-contained town, administered and maintained by the 20th Fighter Wing through the 20th Mission Support Group, supporting more than 5, 400 military and civilian employees and 11, 000 family members.

The last Eagle Squadron was disbanded in September 1942, with most of the members transferring into the United States Army Air Force, primarily the 4th Fighter Group of the U. S. Eighth Air Force.

Reactivated as the 4th Fighter Wing on July 28, 1947, members of the wing have served all over the world, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

From the time of the Battle of Britain onwards, the upper floors were used as dormitories housing one hundred members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force from the Royal Air Force's No. 10 Group, RAF Fighter Command, based at the nearby RAF Rudloe Manor.

It marked the beginning of Namco's new primary sound team after their former members began working with other companies doing production on games such as Street Fighter EX ( 1996 ) and Driving Emotion Type-S ( 2000 ).

Six months later, approximately 400 members were deployed to Tuy Hoa Air Base, Republic of Viet Nam, performing combat duty for almost a year, being attached to the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing.

The team, dubbed the " Sabre Dancers ", was composed of five members of the 27th Fighter Squadron.

The bomb kiled 19 Air Force members, including five airmen of the 71st Rescue Squadron, and consequently the 1st Fighter Wing relocated its Southwest Asia operations from Dhahran to Prince Sultan Air Base, Al Kharj.
