James Fisk, Jr. ( April 1, 1835 – January 6, 1872 ) – known variously as " Big Jim ," " Diamond Jim ," and " Jubilee Jim " – was an American stockbroker and corporate executive who has been referred to as one of the " robber barons " of the Gilded Age.

Increasingly frustrated and flirting with bankruptcy, Stokes shot and killed Fisk in New York City on January 6, 1872 in the Grand Central Hotel.

Fisk University is an historically black university founded in 1866 in Nashville, Tennessee, United States.

In 1866 six months after the end of the American Civil War, leaders of the northern American Missionary Association ( AMA ): John Ogden, Reverend Erastus Milo Cravath, field secretary ; and Reverend Edward Parmelee Smith founded the Fisk Free Colored School, for education of freedmen.

Under the direction and sponsorship of the Bureau, together with the American Missionary Association in many cases, from approximately 1866 until its termination in 1872, an estimated 25 institutions of higher learning for black youth were established, many of which remain in operation today ( for example, St. Augustine's College, Fisk University, Johnson C. Smith University, Clark Atlanta University, Dillard University, Shaw University, Virginia Union University, and Tougaloo College ).

In addition, the 1952 study collected comparable data from 4,585 students at ten other colleges and universities scattered across the country: Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Wesleyan, North Carolina, Fisk, Texas, University of California at Los Angeles, Wayne, and Michigan.

Dr. James Brown Fisk, physicist, President of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, was elected to the Board of Trustees.
