Niven played Alexander ' Alec ' Fleming, one of a family of retired con artists who now fleece villains in the interests of justice.

In his later years he retired to his house in Halifax, later deeding the house and the 95 acres ( 38 hectares ) to the city, now known as Sir Sandford Fleming Park ( Dingle Park ).

Based upon the success of his Fleming biography, The Life of Ian Fleming ( 1966 ), MI6 instruct Pearson to write 007's biography ; he is introduced to a retired James Bond — who is in his fifties, yet healthy, sun-tanned, and with Honeychile Ryder, the heroine of Dr. No. Most of James Bond: The Authorized Biography of 007 is Bond telling his life story, including school and first MI6 missions, referring to most every novel and short story and, notably, to Colonel Sun, the Robert Markham series-continuation novel.

At the end of the story Mr. Brownlow reveals to Rose that she is the daughter of a retired naval officer who was a good friend of Oliver's father, and that her much older sister, Agnes Fleming, eventually became Oliver's mother.

In 1992, Fleming retired, moving with Becky to Crystal River, Florida.

He was the third of the four children of farmer Hugh Fleming ( 1816 – 1888 ) from his second marriage to Grace Stirling Morton ( 1848 – 1928 ), the daughter of a neighbouring farmer.

After working in a shipping office for four years, the twenty-year-old Fleming inherited some money from an uncle, John Fleming.

Following World War I, Fleming actively searched for anti-bacterial agents, having witnessed the death of many soldiers from sepsis resulting from infected wounds.

In an article he submitted for the medical journal The Lancet during World War I, Fleming described an ingenious experiment, which he was able to conduct as a result of his own glass blowing skills, in which he explained why antiseptics were killing more soldiers than infection itself during World War I. Antiseptics worked well on the surface, but deep wounds tended to shelter anaerobic bacteria from the antiseptic agent, and antiseptics seemed to remove beneficial agents produced that protected the patients in these cases at least as well as they removed bacteria, and did nothing to remove the bacteria that were out of reach.

Fleming finally abandoned penicillin, and not long after he did, Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford took up researching and mass-producing it, with funds from the U. S. and British governments.

The demonym for Flanders is Flemish, while someone from Flanders is a Fleming.

For example, in 1986, students from Mudd stole a memorial cannon from Fleming House at Caltech ( originally from the National Guard ) by dressing as maintenance people and carting it off on a flatbed truck for " cleaning.

Fleming took the name for his character from that of the American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbean bird expert and author of the definitive field guide Birds of the West Indies ; Fleming, a keen birdwatcher himself, had a copy of Bond's guide and he later explained to the ornithologist's wife that " It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born ".

After Diamonds are Forever was published in 1956 Fleming received a letter from Bond enthusiast and gun expert Geoffrey Boothroyd, criticising his choice of firearm for Bond.

Fleming accepted the criticism from the paper concerning the exclusivity of Bond's objects, such as cigarettes and food, but defended it on the basis that " I had to fit Bond out with some theatrical props ".

His other alma mater, the Royal Polytechnic Institution ( now the University of Westminster ) has named one of its student halls of residence Alexander Fleming House, which is near to Old Street.

Ambrose Fleming was born in Lancaster and educated at University College School, London, and University College London.
