An important commission in terms of the client, were alterations to William Pitt the Younger's house at Holwood House in 1786, Soane had befriended William Pitt's uncle Thomas on his grand tour ; In ( 1787 ) Soane remodelled the interior of Fonthill Splendens ( later replaced by Fonthill Abbey ) for Thomas Beckford, adding a picture gallery lit by two domes and other work.

Burn also designed Fonthill House for him in Scottish Baronial style.

Lord Westminster died at Fonthill House, Fonthill Gifford in Wiltshire on 31 October 1869 after a short illness and was buried in the family vault in St Mary's Church, Eccleston.

The commission is responsible for overseeing a range of designated landmarks ranging from the Fonthill House in the North Bronx, built in 1852 for the actor Edwin Forrest, to the 1670s Conference House, where Benjamin Franklin and John Adams visited Staten Island.

This in turn was a replacement of an older parish church that stood near the stream in the north-east quarter of the parish close to the now demolished Fonthill House ( see map ).

The original paintings of A Harlot's Progress were destroyed in the fire at Fonthill Abbey in 1755 ; A Rake's Progress is displayed in the gallery room at Sir John Soane's Museum, London.

It was constructed near the site of the Palladian house, later known as Fonthill Splendens, which was constructed by his father, William Beckford, to replace the Elizabethan house that Beckford père had purchased in 1744 and which had been destroyed by fire in 1755.

At his trial it was claimed that in 1621 Henry Skipwith arrived at Fonthill Gifford and within a few years was so close to the Earl that he sat at the family table and was to be addressed as “ Mister ” by the servants.

Fonthill Abbey — also known as Beckford's Folly — was a large Gothic revival country house built around the turn of the 19th century at Fonthill Gifford in Wiltshire, England, at the direction of William Thomas Beckford and architect James Wyatt.

Fonthill Abbey was a brainchild of William Thomas Beckford, son of wealthy English plantation owner William Beckford and a student of architect Sir William Chambers, as well as of James Wyatt, architect of the project.

A spectacular Christmas party lasting for three days was held for the boy at Fonthill.

Furthermore, the evidence suggests that he was not only happy to undertake all of those duties, but Brockman even suggests that Beckford must have lived some of his brightest moments of his adult life managing the construction and landscaping efforts of Fonthill.

This is not to say that Wyatt's role in the construction of Fonthill was by any means minor to Beckford's, the former having been not only the author of the design of the building ( based on Beckford's ideas ), but he was ultimately a master at combining the different volumes and scales in the building, and in doing so he achieved a faux effect of layered historical development in the building by combining different stylistic architectural elements.

Henry Chapman Mercer ( born June 24, 1856, Doylestown, Pennsylvania – died March 2, 1930, Doylestown ) was an American archeologist, artifact collector, tile-maker and designer of three distinctive poured concrete structures: Fonthill, his home, the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, and the Mercer Museum.

During the early 19th century the romantic medieval Gothic revival style was developed as a reaction to the symmetry of Palladianism, and such buildings as Fonthill Abbey were built.

The most bizarre example of this was probably Fonthill Abbey which actually set out to imitate the mansions which had truly evolved from medieval gothic abbeys following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century.

It replaced a neoclassical church built in 1747 – 49 near the parish boundary where the Hindon — Tisbury and Fonthill Bishop to Semley roads cross.
