* Ford Orion, a car

Until the launch of the Orion in 1983, the larger and more expensive Granada was the only saloon-bodied car available in the European Ford range.

The company launched the Ford Orion in 1983 to fill the gap in the saloon range between the late Cortina and the new Sierra.

The saloon was launched in January 1986 and sold as the Vauxhall Belmont ; this trend to brand saloon models independently of hatchbacks was also used by other manufacturers of the period, with examples including the Ford Orion and the Volkswagen Jetta.

However, this strategy was mostly unsuccessful, as this was Vauxhall's only attempt at badging its hatchback-based saloon as a separate model, and Ford rebadged its Orion range as Escorts in September 1993.

Following much the same strategy in Europe was the Ford Orion, a four-door saloon which had Escort mechanicals.

The fourth generation Escort and Orion of 1990 was the zenith of this cost-cutting / high price philosophy which was by then beginning to backfire on Ford, with the cars being slated for their substandard ride and handling, though a facelift in 1992 had seen things improve a little.

It first appeared in 1118cc and 1297cc guises on the Ford Escort and Orion for the 1989 model year, and on the then new Ford Fiesta Mark III the same year, which also offered a smaller 999cc version to replace the older 957cc Valencia.

The Ford Orion is a saloon car built by the automaker Ford for the European market from 22 July 1983 until 19 September 1993.

The Orion is based on the Ford Escort, but instead of the Escort's hatchback, the Orion features a separate boot, making it a saloon.

Ford Orion GL Mark I

Although the Orion's length was similar to that of the contemporary Ford Sierra, the Sierra was only then available as a hatchback, giving it more rear legroom with the Orion having a larger boot.

Ford initially offered the Orion in only GL and Ghia trim levels, missing out on the very lowest specification levels available on the Escort.

Eventually though, as the years went by, Ford brought the styling and engineering of the Orion closer to the Escort's and lower-specification models crept into the range along with equipment levels being brought together between the two cars.

Ford Orion Mark II

The range topping Orion Ghia Si ( sports injection ) had out of its 1. 8L DOHC Zetec unit, making this the fastest production model Orion that Ford produced through the cars 10 year life.

In September 1993, Ford deleted the Orion nametag, and the Escort nameplate was used on all bodystyles.

Ford retained a US $ 77 million ( or 12. 1 %) stake in Aston Martin, valuing the company at $ 925 million.

When family friend John T. Ford opened 1, 500-seat Ford's Theatre on November 9 in Washington, D. C., Booth was one of the first leading men to appear there, playing in Charles Selby's The Marble Heart.
