Gen. John B. Floyd, who was to take command at Fort Donelson as the senior general present just before Brig.

Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River, although in a better location, also was not well – site, had a vulnerable land side and did not have enough heavy artillery for its defense against gunboats.

Maj. Gen. Polk ignored the problems of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson when he took command and, after Johnston took command, at first refused to comply with Johnston's order to send an engineer, Lt. Joseph K. Dixon, to inspect the forts.

Then, in order to prevent Polk from dissipating his forces by implementing his proposal to allow some men to join a partisan group, Johnston ordered him to send Pillow and 5, 000 men to Fort Donelson.

Gen. Lloyd Tilghman surrendered the 94 remaining officers and men of his approximately 3, 000-man force which had not been sent to Fort Donelson before U. S. Grant's force could even take up their positions.

Johnston knew he could be trapped at Bowling Green if Fort Donelson fell, so he moved his force to Nashville, the capital of Tennessee and an increasingly important Confederate industrial center, beginning on February 11, 1862.

Johnston also reinforced Fort Donelson with 12, 000 more men, including those under Floyd and Pillow, a curious decision in view of his thought that the Union gunboats alone might be able to take the fort.

Gen. Simon Buckner, having been abandoned by Floyd and Pillow, surrendered Fort Donelson.

Johnston, who had little choice in allowing Floyd and Pillow to take charge at Fort Donelson on the basis of seniority after he ordered them to add their forces to the garrison, took the blame and suffered calls for his removal because a full explanation to the press and public would have exposed the weakness of the Confederate position.

The town of Nashville was founded by James Robertson, John Donelson, and a party of Overmountain Men in 1779, near the original Cumberland settlement of Fort Nashborough.

Grant's troops, in close collaboration with the Union Navy under Foote, successfully captured Fort Henry on the Tennessee River on February 6, 1862 and nearby Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River on February 16.

However, at Fort Donelson, Grant and Foote encountered stiffer resistance from the Confederate forces under General Pillow.

With 12, 000 Confederate troops at Fort Donelson, Foote's initial approach by Union naval ships were repulsed by Donelson's guns.

Grant's superior, Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck, was concerned about Confederate reinforcements retaking the forts, so Grant left Wallace with his brigade in command at Fort Henry while the rest of the army moved overland toward Fort Donelson.

Burlington aviator John J. Burns suggested the parade ground southwest of Fort Ethan Allen, and soon a dozen hastily-summoned National Guard pilots were bringing their wide-winged `` Jenny '' and DeHaviland two-seaters to rest on the frozen sod of the military base.

The site is a U. S .- designated National Historic Landmark, and is operated as the " Fort Garland Museum ".

Headquarters for the National Security Agency is at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, about southwest of Baltimore.

The largest of these installations were the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Ceiba, the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, and the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility ( AFWTF ) on Vieques ( all now closed ), the National Guard training facility at Camp Santiago in Salinas, the Army's Fort Buchanan in San Juan, the former U. S. Air Force Ramey Air Force Base in Aguadilla, and the Puerto Rico Air National Guard at Muñiz Air Force base in San Juan.

In 1990, the first National Poetry Slam took place in Fort Mason, San Francisco, involving a team from Chicago, a team from San Francisco, and an individual poet from New York.

The Guns Platoon ( as it is known for short ) has the task of rendering military honors in the National Capital Region, including armed forces full-honors funerals ; state funerals ; presidential inaugurations ; full-honors wreath ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery ; state arrivals at the White House and Pentagon, and retirement ceremonies for general-grade officers in the Military District of Washington, which are normally conducted at Fort Myer.

In the early 1980s the M551A1 was fitted with a visual modification kit to resemble Warsaw Pact vehicles at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California.

McLoughlin's former residence in Oregon City, now known as the McLoughlin House, is today a museum ; it is part of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

Declared a National Historic Landmark, it is owned and operated by the state of New York as the Fort Montgomery State Historic Site.

Several large U. S. Department of Defense installations and R & D facilities surround Columbia, the largest being the National Security Agency at Fort George G. Meade, and the Applied Physics Laboratory, both pre-dating the establishment of Columbia.

The uses of these islands vary: Davids ' Island, the former location of the U. S. Army ’ s Fort Slocum, is currently unoccupied but is slated for use as passive parkland ; Glen Island is a County park for passive and active recreation ; Huckleberry Island is largely undeveloped and has one of the largest rookeries for some shore bird species in western Long Island Sound ; Columbia Island was the former site of CBS television broadcast antennas and is currently unoccupied ; Echo Island is used by a private yacht club ; Execution Rocks is the site of a 19th century lighthouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places ; Pea Island is owned by Huguenot Yacht Club but remains undeveloped ; Goose Island is undeveloped ; Clifford, Harrison and Tank Islands are part of a nature preserve and city park ; and Oak and Pine Islands are used as private residences.
