Greenville was named after Fort Greene Ville ( now Greenville ), Ohio, the site where General Anthony Wayne signed a treaty with the Native Americans after defeating them in the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794.

Incidentally, Fort Greene Ville, Ohio, was named after Nathaniel Greene, a friend of Wayne.

In November 1776, a farmer from Closter witnessed British troops landing at Closter Dock on the Hudson River and rode to Fort Lee to warn Continental Army General Nathaniel Greene, allowing the Americans the opportunity to retreat to Hackensack at New Bridge Landing ahead of the British along with the remnants of General George Washington's troops after the failed Battle of Fort Washington.

Fort Greene Ville, now Greenville, the Darke County seat, is 5 miles to the north ; Fort Black, now New Madison, is located 5 miles to the south.

After the building burned to the ground on November 30, 1903, plans were made to relocate to a new facility in the then fashionable neighborhood of Fort Greene.

It is located within the Fort Greene Historic District.

The three forts were named Fort Putnam ( for Rufus Putnam ), Fort Greene ( for Nathanael Greene ) and Fort Box ( for Major Daniel Box ).

Fort Putnam was furthest to the north, with Greene slightly to the southwest and Box slightly further southwest.

On August 9, 1776, he was promoted to be one of the four new major generals and was put in command of the Continental Army troops on Long Island ; he chose the place for fortifications, and built the redoubts and entrenchments of Fort Putnam ( the site of current day Fort Greene Park ) east of Brooklyn Heights.

It is bordered by Boerum Hill, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Prospect Heights, Williamsburg, and Fort Greene.

By the 1840s, Clinton Hill, and its sister neighborhood Fort Greene had become fashionable neighborhoods for the wealthy of Brooklyn, who could commute to Manhattan by way of stagecoach to the Fulton Ferry in nearby Brooklyn Heights.

Its appeal from ballots to bullets at Fort Sumter ended by costing the Southerners their right to have slaves -- a right that was even less compatible with the sovereignty of man.

The new site was somewhat warmer than Fort Douglas and much closer to the great herds of buffalo on which the settlement must depend for food.

The Battle of Fort Dearborn ( also known as the Fort Dearborn Massacre ) was an engagement between United States troops and Potawatomi Indians that occurred on August 15, 1812, near Fort Dearborn in what is now Chicago, Illinois, but was then part of the Illinois Territory.
