At the same time that Frigate Captain Domingo de Monteverde was making fast and vast advances into republican territory from the west ( his forces had entered Valencia on May 3, 1812 ), Bolívar lost control of San Felipe Fort along with its ammunition stores on June 30, when the royalist prisoners held there managed to take it over and attack the small number of troops in the city.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro also known as Fort San Felipe del Morro or Morro Castle, is a 16th-century citadel located in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

On a bluff about high at the west end of the island and commanding the entrance to the harbor rise the battlements of Fort San Felipe del Morro, in which there is a lighthouse.

Near Fort San Felipe del Morro is the Casa Blanca, a palace on land which belonged to the family of Ponce de Leon.

After the Grito de Lares ( Cry of Lares ) revolt in 1868, he was suspected of being a conspirator and was imprisoned in the dungeons of Fort San Felipe del Morro by General Pavia, even though he had not participated in the failed revolt.

The Conservative Party considered this a threat and closed the newspapers where he published his work, sending part of their staff to jail in Fort San Felipe del Morro.
