Very near is Fradley Junction ( with the Coventry Canal ( detached portion ).

Fradley Junction () is a canal junction between Fradley and Alrewas near Lichfield, Staffordshire, England and the point at which the Coventry Canal joins the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Until 1 April 2009 it was part of the civil parish of Alrewas and Fradley, but is now a parish in its own right.

Fradley Junction is a popular place to observe canal traffic, as are many other junctions, due to the occasional need for three boats to pass.

The station is located 1 mile north-east from the City Centre and serves the East and North side of the city, as well as being used by commuters from surrounding villages, such as Fradley, Alrewas and Whittington.

Fradley was a major junction on the Victorian canal network.

The Coventry canal was authorised two years after the Trent and Mersey, in 1768, and should have run from Coventry, via Bedworth and Atherstone, to join the Grand Trunk Canal at Fradley.

The canalside settlement at Fradley Junction was established after the link was completed in 1790.

At the time, the coalfields at Walsall did not have canal access, and a public meeting was held at Lichfield on 18 August, to discuss an independent link from Walsall to Fradley Junction on the Trent and Mersey Canal, passing through Lichfield.

The Trent and Mersey would finish that link by building the remainder of the route to Fradley Junction.

It also provided the central hub of the cross, between Great Haywood, and Fradley Junctions.

Just outside the city Wellington Bombers flew out of Fradley Aerodrome which was known as RAF Lichfield.

The Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom | Act of Parliament for construction of the Coventry Canal under James Brindley was passed in 1768, and runs via Nuneaton and Atherstone to Fradley Junction near Lichfield.

It starts in Coventry and ends 38 miles ( 65 km ) north at Fradley Junction, just north of Lichfield, where it joins the Trent and Mersey Canal.

The Coventry canal continues northwards to end at Fradley Junction where it joins the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Although the canal reached the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal at Fazeley, the final Parliament-approved stretch to the Trent and Mersey at Fradley was not finished until 1789.

The Trent and Mersey company, and the Birmingham and Fazeley company, anxious to allow through traffic from Birmingham to the Trent and Mersey canal, gained permission to complete and operate the approved but unbuilt section from Fazeley to Fradley.

The B & F worked North from Fazeley, and the T & M worked south from Fradley.

The full length from Coventry to Fradley was opened in 1789.

Consequently, construction stopped at Atherstone, some from Fradley.

It was completed in 1789, and the network, including Fradley Junction, was operational by the following year.

Situated close to Alrewas are the villages of Wychnor, Barton-under-Needwood, Fradley and Kings Bromley.

The heath was the originally the site of the Lichfield races which had moved from Fradley in 1702.

One such location is Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve, Shark Bay in Western Australia where excellent specimens are observed today, and another is Lagoa Salgada, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, where modern stromatolites can be observed as bioherm ( domal type ) and beds.

Stromatolites in Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve | Hamelin Pool are ancient structures that are built by microbes.

It includes many protected areas and conservation reserves, including Shark Bay Marine Park, Francois Peron National Park, Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve, Zuytdorp Nature Reserve and numerous protected islands.

The surrounding area of the North Somerset Levels provides wildlife habitats including the Tickenham, Nailsea and Kenn Moors biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and Bucklands Pool / Backwell Lake Local Nature Reserve.

The Bucklands Pool / Backwell Lake Local Nature Reserve, southeast of the town centre and close to the Nailsea and Backwell railway station, was constructed as a balancing pond in the mid-1970s, and has since become home to various wildfowl and dragonflies and a foraging area for bats.

There are landscaped gardens, public art, bird refuges, a zoo, the Lincoln Park Conservatory, the Chicago History Museum, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, and a theater on the lake with regular outdoor performances during the summer.

The southern portion of this zone-the Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve has no fishing allowed.

Now defunct as a reservoir it has been adopted by Birmingham City Council, along with the nearby Merecroft Pool, as a Local Nature Reserve.

An English Nature reintroduction project is underway in Breckland, where Pool Frogs were introduced to a single site in 2005.
