After two better known directors turned down the job, cast member Jonathan Frakes was chosen to direct to make sure the task fell to someone who understood Star Trek.

Frakes commented that it would have been a mistake to cast Hanks as Cochrane due to his being so well known.

Through this relationship, Frakes was able to cast Woodard in the film ; he considered it a coup to land an Academy Award-nominated actress.

William Thomas " Tom " Riker is a fictional character from the Star Trek universe, played by actor Jonathan Frakes.

He is a duplicate of William Riker, a regular character on Star Trek: The Next Generation, also played by Frakes, who was created by a transporter accident when Riker served as second officer aboard the USS Potemkin.

Co-written by Randall Frakes, and also starring Kadeem Hardison, the film has not yet been shown in the US.
