In 1598, Francis Meres published his Palladis Tamia, a survey of English literature from Chaucer to its present day, within which twelve of Shakespeare's plays are named.

The play is not mentioned in the list of Shakespeare's plays published by Francis Meres in 1598.

The date of composition is unknown, but must lie somewhere between 1587, the year of publication of the second, revised edition of Holinshed's Chronicles, upon which Shakespeare drew for this and other plays, and 1598, when King John was mentioned among Shakespeare's plays in the Palladis Tamia of Francis Meres.

A play mentioned by Francis Meres, Love's Labour's Won, is believed by some to be a sequel to this play.

Francis Meres says Marlowe was " stabbed to death by a bawdy serving-man, a rival of his in his lewd love " as punishment for his " epicurism and atheism ".

Except for Crowley and Francis Meres ( who simply cribs Webbe ) William Webbe is the only person to comment on the alliterative Piers Plowman favorably, since he disliked verse with " the curiosity of Ryme.

Francis Meres includes Dekker in his list of notable playwrights in 1598.

It may be indicative of his abilities that of all the writers who did a substantial amount of work for Henslowe ’ s companies Day is one of only two not mentioned and praised by Francis Meres in his lists of the “ the best ” writers in 1598.
