Aging but still precocious, French feline enfant terrible Francoisette Lagoon has succeeded in shocking jaded old Paris again, this time with a sexy ballet scenario called The Lascivious Interlude, the story of a nymphomaniac trip-hammer operator who falls hopelessly in love with a middle-aged steam shovel.

After the financial collapse of the Italian opera company in 1777 due to financial mis-management, Joseph II decided to end the performance of Italian opera, French spoken drama, and ballet.

Verdi made some changes to the score for the French premiere of Le trouvère including the addition of music for the ballet in act 3 and several revisions focusing on the music of Azucena, including an extended version of the finale of act 4, to accommodate the role's singer Borghi-Mamo.

The style of this A section is written in the typical French style of composers Claude Debussy and Les Six.

A theme from his 1717 opera Camille was used as the basis of the collaborative work La guirlande de Campra by seven French composers, written in 1952.
