Freud had speculated 40 years previously that traumas with similar content join together in " chains ," embedded in the unconscious mind, to cause irrational responses in the individual.

Freud stated that homosexuality could sometimes be removed through hypnotic suggestion, and was influenced by Eugen Steinach, a Viennese endocrinologist who transplanted testicles from straight men into gay men in attempts to change their sexual orientation, stating that his research had “ thrown a strong light on the organic determinants of homo-eroticism ”.

Freud ‘ s main discussion of female homosexuality was the 1920 paper “ The Psychogenesis of a Case of Homosexuality in a Woman “, which described his analysis of a young woman who had entered therapy because her parents were concerned that she was a lesbian.

In 1935, Freud wrote to a mother who had asked him to treat her son a letter that later became famous:

Brill criticised physical treatments for homosexuality such as bladder washing, rectal massage, and castration, along with hypnosis, but referred approvingly to Freud and Sadger's use of psychoanalysis, calling its results “ very gratifying .“ Since Brill understood cure of homosexuality to mean restoring heterosexual potency, he claimed that he had cured his patients in several cases, even though many remained homosexual.

Freud had actually mentioned a collective level of psychic functioning but saw it primarily as an appendix to the rest of the psyche.

In his book The Assault on Truth, Masson argues that Freud may have abandoned his seduction theory because he feared that granting the truth of his female patients ' claims that they had been sexually abused would hinder the acceptance of his psychoanalytic methods.

Between 1915 and 1918, Rank served as Secretary of the International Psychoanalytical Association which Freud had founded in 1910.

The recommendation in Freud ’ s technical papers for analysts to be emotionless, according to Ferenczi and Rank ( 1924 ), had led to " an unnatural elimination of all human factors in the analysis " ( pp. 40 – 41 ), and to " a theorizing of experience " ( p. 41 ): the feeling experience of the intersubjective relationship, two first-person experiences, within the analytic situation.

The book was so widely read that Sigmund Freud reported a number of patients with sado-masochistic tendencies who he believed had been influenced by reading about the whipping of slaves in Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Mr. Stadlen tracked down relatives of Mr. Lanzer who said the account handed down by the family was that Freud had helped him overcome shyness so that he could marry.

Thus for example Jung's initial '" unconditional devotion " to Freud's theories and his " no less unconditional veneration " of Freud's person ' was seen at the time by both men as a ' quasi-religious infatuation to ... a cult object '; while Freud in turn was ' very attracted by Jung's personality ', perhaps ' saw in Jung an idealized version of himself ': a mutual admiration society-' intellectually infatuated with one another '.

Klein felt that the psychodynamic battleground that Freud proposed occurs very early in life, during infancy.

Edmund Bergler, one of his early followers, considered that ' as Freud and Ferenczi have shown, the child lives in a sort of megalomania for a long period ; he knows only one yardstick, and that is his own over-inflated ego .... Megalomania, it must be understood, is normal in the very young child '.

According to Freud ’ s Psychosexual Theory, parents need to be very careful in how they react to their children during this sensitive stage.

For Sigmund Freud, " rather than being a matter only for a minority of men who identify as homosexual or gay, homoeroticism is a part of the very formation of all men as human subjects and social actors.
