The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD ) is a US non-governmental media monitoring organization which promotes the image of LGBT people in the media.

Formed in New York City in 1985 to protest against what it saw as the New York Posts defamatory and sensationalized AIDS coverage, GLAAD put pressure on media organizations to end what it saw as homophobic reporting.

Entertainment Weekly has named GLAAD as one of Hollywood's most powerful entities, and the Los Angeles Times described GLAAD as " possibly one of the most successful organizations lobbying the media for inclusion.

GLAAD promotes positive portrayals of LGBT people in media by encouraging journalists, writers and other creators to use its preferred terminology, and to portray the LGBT community in what it sees as an unbiased and inclusive way.

GLAAD also pitches stories to media outlets that involve members of the LGBT community that may otherwise be overlooked.

The GLAAD Media Awards were established in 1989 to " recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.

" Sacha Baron Cohen's well-meaning attempt at satire is problematic in many places and outright offensive in others ," Rashad Robinson, senior director of media programmes for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD ) told the New York Times.

The GLAAD Media Awards, created by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD ) to recognize and honor the mainstream media for their fair and accurate representations of the LGBT community, presented Wainwright with the award for Outstanding Music Album.

Eventually, even some members of the gay community, including Chastity Bono ( who at the time was the media director for GLAAD ), began to criticize the show's serious new tone as well.

The first GLAAD Media Awards were presented by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in 1990 to honor the 1989 season, and were envisioned as a way to recognize various branches of the media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.

In addition to media monitoring by the juries, GLAAD issues a " Call for Entries ", inviting media outlets to submit their work for consideration, however, GLAAD may nominate a mainstream media project even if it is not submitted as part of the call for entries.

Voters are made up of three groups: GLAAD staff and board, GLAAD Alliance and Media Circle members, and GLAAD volunteers & allies ( which include former Honorees, media industry allies, volunteers from the " Nominating Juries " and " Event Production Teams ").

This same performance also led to an “ Excellence in Media Award ” by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD ).

It was awarded and nominated for numerous awards, including six American Library Association awards, a nomination for an Eisner Award, won Winick his first GLAAD award, has been praised by creators such as Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, and Armistead Maupin, and has been incorporated into school curricula across the country.

Within the first five years of its founding in New York as the Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation League ( soon after changed to GLAAD after legal pressure by the Anti-Defamation League ), GLAAD chapters had been established in Los Angeles and other cities, with the LA chapter becoming particularly influential due to its proximity to the California entertainment industry.

Three of their four studio albums have been recognized by the GLAAD Media Awards, consecutively winning the band the award for Outstanding Music Artist ( in 2005, 2007 and 2011 ) while Out magazine also ranked their first two albums on their list of the 100 Greatest, Gayest Albums in 2008: Scissor Sisters ( 2004 ) was number 26 while Ta-Dah ( 2006 ) was 81.

This led to protests by GLAAD.

It was awarded six American Library Association awards, was nominated for an Eisner Award, won Winick his first GLAAD award, has been praised by creators such as Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, and Armistead Maupin, and has been incorporated into school curricula across the country.

Honorees are selected by a process involving over 700 GLAAD Media Award voters and volunteers and are evaluated using four criteria: " Fair, Accurate and Inclusive Representations " of the LGBT community, " Boldness and Originality " of the project, significant " Cultural Impact " on mainstream culture, and " Overall Quality " of the project.

The sculpture was traditionally etched with the year it was presented followed by the words " GLAAD Media Award " and was mounted perpendicular to its flat, quadrant shaped base.

The award remained unchanged until 2009, when an all new statuette designed by David Moritz of Society Awards was unveiled for the 20th annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies.

Nominees are selected by GLAAD " Nominating Juries " consisting of over 90 volunteers with interest and expertise in the particular category they are judging.

It also won the GLAAD Award for Best Comic Book in 2001.

The series also won a 2011 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book.

David would eventually be nominated for and win a 2011 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book for this second run on the title.

As a social activist, Bono became a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, promoted National Coming Out Day, campaigned for the reelection of Bill Clinton for US President, campaigned against the Defense of Marriage Act, and served as Entertainment Media Director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD ).

" GLAAD and the Empowering Spirits Foundation were quick to offer praise and support for the announcement.
