GSG 9 is deployed in cases of hostage taking, kidnapping, terrorism and extortion.

At the time of the 1977 Mogadishu mission, the Commander of the Israeli Border Police Tzvi War described GSG 9 as " The best anti-terrorist group in the world.

The STAR team is known to have sent officers extensively for overseas training attachments and study visits with units such as Hong Kong's Special Duties Unit, Israeli Border Guard's Yamam, Germany's GSG 9, and the Australian SASR.

In the night between October 17 and October 18, Somalian ranger units created a distraction, while members of the GSG 9, accompanied by two British SAS operatives as observers, stormed the plane.

Wegener was the GSG 9 commander at the liberation of the hostages of the PFLP on the Boeing 737 Landshut, operated by Lufthansa as flight 181, in Mogadishu, Somalia, in the night from the 17th to the 18th October 1977.

There, in Operation Feuerzauber (" Fire Magic "), the West German counterterrorism unit GSG 9 storms the plane on October 18 and frees the hostages, killing three of the hijackers and wounding and capturing the fourth.

NOCS has trained with many international units including the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, Israeli Yamam, German GSG 9 and SEK, Spanish GEO, French RAID, Japanese SAT, Swiss DEE10, Saudi Arabian National Guard CT Team, Belgian ESI, US 10th Special Forces Group, Danish Jægerkorpset and Dutch KCT and has graduated operatives through the NATO's International LRRP School in Weingarten, Germany.
