Afterwards a Gallo-Roman culture emerged and Gaul was increasingly integrated into the Roman Empire.

Gaul remained under Roman control for centuries and Celtic culture was then gradually replaced by Gallo-Roman culture.

During this time, the Celtic culture had become amalgamated into a Gallo-Roman culture and the Gaulish language was likely extinct by the 6th century.

Gallo-Roman culture, the Romanized culture of Gaul under the rule of the Roman Empire, persisted particularly in the areas of Gallia Narbonensis that developed into Occitania, Gallia Cisalpina and to a lesser degree, Aquitania.

Gallo-Roman language persisted in the northeast into the Silva Carbonaria that formed an effective cultural barrier, with the Franks to the north and east, and in the northwest to the lower valley of the Loire, where Gallo-Roman culture interfaced with Frankish culture in a city like Tours and in the person of that Gallo-Roman bishop confronted with Merovingian royals, Gregory of Tours.

The Franks may have become largely assimilated to the preponderant Gallo-Roman culture by the 8th century, but their names were well in use by the ruling class, like Odo.

The name may indicate either that a Celtic settlement existed on the site before or just be a testimony to the mixed Gallo-Roman culture in the north-west provinces of the Roman Empire.

Gregory lived also on the border between the Frankish culture of the Merovingians to the north and the Gallo-Roman culture of the south of Gaul.

His extensive literary output is itself a testimony to the preservation of learning and to the lingering continuity of Gallo-Roman civic culture through the so-called ' Dark Ages '.

Bronze coins and artifacts associated with the Gallo-Roman culture show extensive activity in this area in the first centuries of our era.

The Roman occupation led to a Roman-Thracian syncretism, and similar to the case of other conquered civilisation ( see Gallo-Roman culture developed in Roman Gaul ), had as final result the Latinization of many Thracian tribes which were on the edge of the sphere of Latin influence, eventually resulting in the possible extinction of the Daco-Thracian language ( unless, of course, Albanian is its descendant ), although traces of it are still preserved in the Eastern Romance substratum.

However, Deyts notes that the bronze Gallo-Roman statue of a woman in a short belted tunic, riding a boar sidesaddle and holding a knife ( Boucher fig. 292, or here ), bears no inscription, and was simply assumed to be Arduinna by the 19th century antiquarian who discovered it — perhaps because the modern symbol of the Ardennes region is also a boar ( Deyts 1992, pp. 46 – 47 ).
