Shakyamuni Gautama ( who left a more severe ascetism to seek a reasoned " middle way " of balanced life ), Mahavir Swami, Anthony the Great ( St. Anthony of the Desert ), Francis of Assisi, Jesus, and Mahatma Gandhi can all be considered ascetics.
