The friendly was against Cardiff City, managed by Dave Jones, who also managed County whilst Gannon was a player at the club.

Later in the year Gannon publicly criticised Paul Ince and the MK Dons after he felt the " Dons " were poor sports in their 3 – 2 victory over County that ensured Ince's side promotion out of the division.

Gannon led County to an impressive start to the season following their promotion, and they spent Christmas in the play-off places with the best away record in the division.

The new year started uncomfortably for Gannon ; with media speculation linking him with a move away from Edgeley Park, and the club announcing they were in financial difficulty, he took interviews reassuring fans of his intent to stick by County.

Following the resignation of Dietmar Hamann in November 2011, speculation came of a return to Stockport County for Gannon ; when questioned on the possibility, club chairman Lord Snape stated that should he apply for the position then " he'd merit very serious consideration ".

Gannon played with the Washington Redskins in 1993, the Kansas City Chiefs from 1995 to 1998, and the Oakland Raiders from 1999 to 2004.

After retiring from football before the 2005 season, Gannon began a career in sports broadcasting.

Steve Christie kicked the winning field goal for Tampa in a drive started from a Wayne Haddix interception of a Gannon pass.

In the fourth quarter of the Week 5 ( October 4 ) home game against the Chicago Bears, Gannon led a Vikings rally from a 20-0 deficit to a 21-20 victory.

With the Redskins, Gannon played in eight games and started the four games from Weeks 12 to 15.

After a 2-7 start, Redskins coach Richie Petitbon announced he would bench Mark Rypien and start Rich Gannon once Gannon recovered from the injury.

Porter's best season came in 2002, when he recorded 688 yards and 9 touchdowns from quarterback Rich Gannon on the Raiders ' way to Super Bowl XXXVII, where they lost to the Buccaneers 48 – 21.

New York defensive back Damien Robinson intercepted a pass from Gannon on the next play, but Oakland's Eric Barton returned the favor with an interception of his own, setting up a 34-yard Janikowski field goal.
