Garfield at this time purchased the property in Mentor that reporters later dubbed Lawnfield, and from which he would conduct the first successful front porch campaign for the Presidency.

During his limited time in office, Garfield managed to initiate reform of the Post Office Department's notorious " star route " rings and reassert the superiority of the office of the President over the U. S. Senate on the issue of executive appointments.

The northeast block, separate from the otherwise rectangular area, represents what at one time was Garfield County, which is now occupied partially by the Garfield Township.

An application was submitted in 1881 for a post office to be named " Garfield ", after U. S. President James A. Garfield, but the name was already in use at the time by another post office.

The Robinson Brothers also constructed a brickyard, and it is the only one in existence at the present time, being known as Garfield Refractories Co.
