Garneau was the first Canadian in outer space taking part in three flights aboard NASA Space shuttles.

Joseph Jean-Pierre Marc Garneau was born on February 23, 1949, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He attended primary and secondary schools in Quebec City and Saint-Jean.

Garneau was dogged by the sponsorship scandal, which dragged down most Liberal candidates in marginal Quebec ridings.

However, following the resignation of former Liberal deputy leader Lucienne Robillard, Garneau was nominated as the candidate for the safe Liberal riding of Westmount — Ville-Marie.

Garneau was campaigning to contest in a by-election set for September 8, 2008.

Garneau was narrowly reelected in the 2011 election where he beat New Democratic Party candidate Joanne Corbeil.

Garneau announced later that year that he was considering a bid for the permanent leadership of the party.

Garneau was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1984 in recognition of his role as the first Canadian astronaut.

He also created some sculptural lighting elements in the concert-hall of the Orford Arts Centre, in collaboration with the designer Léonard Garneau, who was in charge of the interior design of the centre.

At the same time, Pamphile Le May was writing intimist poetry about the simple farm life and Alfred Garneau wrote his feelings.

He was chosen over Quebec MP Marc Garneau for the interim leadership on May 25, 2011.

François-Xavier Garneau ( June 15, 1809 – February 2 or February 3, 1866 ) was a nineteenth century French Canadian notary, poet, civil servant and liberal who wrote a three-volume history of the French Canadian nation entitled Histoire du Canada between 1845 and 1848.

Joseph Jean-Pierre Marc Garneau, ( born February 23, 1949 ) is a Canadian politician, retired military officer, former astronaut, and engineer.

In 1974, Garneau began his career in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Navy combat systems engineer on HMCS Algonquin.

Garneau resigned from his employment with the Canadian Space Agency to run for the Liberal Party of Canada in the 2006 federal election.

Garneau is the Honorary Captain of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets.

His books have won various prizes, including the Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine, the Tyrrell Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, three Jason Hannah Medals of the Royal Society of Canada, the Garneau, Macdonald, and Ferguson prizes of the Canadian Historical Association, and the National Business Book Award.

Garneau conducted a series of experiments sponsored by the Canadian government, called CANEX, which were related to medical, atmospheric, climatic, materials and robotic science.
