Théophile Gautier, when asked to write a story about d ' Aubigny, instead produced the novel Mademoiselle de Maupin, published in 1835, taking aspects of the real La Maupin as a starting point, and naming some of the characters after her and her acquaintances.

This series of 10 scenes, or " blocks ", was first staged in a workshop by Elia Kazan at the Actors Studio in 1949, and later turned into a 1953 Broadway production directed by Kazan with assistant by Anna Sokolow and starring Eli Wallach ( as Kilroy ), Frank Silvera ( as Gutman ), Joseph Anthony ( as Casanova ), Jo Van Fleet ( as Marguerite " Camille " Gautier ), Jennie Goldstein ( as the Gypsy ), Barbara Baxley ( as Esmeralda ), and David J. Stewart ( as the Baron ).

In 1867, he asked Théophile Gautier for the hand of his daughter Estelle, but Gautier — who had turned his back on the Bohemian world of his youth and would not let his child marry a writer with few prospects — turned him down.

He entitled it " Shakespeare at the Funambules ", and in it Gautier summarized and analyzed an unnamed pantomime of unusually somber events: Pierrot murders an old-clothes man for garments to court a duchess, then is skewered in turn by the sword with which he stabbed the peddler when the latter's ghost lures him into a dance at his wedding.

In 1865, Gautier was admitted into the prestigious salon of Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, cousin of Napoleon III and niece to Bonaparte.

Gautier translates death into a curiously heady, voluptuous, almost exhilarating experience which diverts him momentarily from the gruesome reality and conveys his urgent plea for light over darkness, life over death.

The devotional may be divided into two sub-sections: the Marian ( the long Milagros de Nuestra Seňora ( Miracles of Our Lady-perhaps influenced by Gautier de Coincy ), the Duelo de la Virgen ( the Mourning of the Virgin, a dialogue between the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux ) and Loores de la Virgen ( the Praises of the Virgin, which is a type of salvation history ); and the hagiographical ( the Vida de San Millán de la Cogolla, Vida de Santo Domingo de Silos and the Vida de Santa Oria: the lives of Aemilian of la Cogolla, Dominic of Silos, and Aurea ( Oria )).

" For grace and style and insight into character ,” wrote Kathleen Tomlinson, " Cécile is reminiscent of Gautier ’ s Mademoiselle de Maupin.

Gautier ’ s son-in-law, Catulle Mendès, refashioned it into a pantomime in 1896, and when Sacha Guitry wrote his play Deburau ( 1918 ) he included it as the only specimen of the mime ’ s art.

Gautier proceeded, apparently intentionally, to lead the American army into a swampy morass from which it took them hours to extricate themselves.

Ridiculed by Gautier as the " Duchess of Abracadantès " and fallen into poverty, she died in a nursing home in Paris in 1838.

M. Theuriet gives natural, simple pictures of rustic and especially of woodland life, and Théophile Gautier compared him to Jaques in the forest of Arden.

Gautier was a celebrated abandonnée who yields or abandons himself to something of the Romantic Ballet, writing several scenarios, the most famous of which is Giselle, whose first interpreter, the ballerina Carlotta Grisi, was the great love of his life.

The ballet's literary source is Le Roman de la Momie by Théophile Gautier, the exponent of literary exoticism which offered all sorts of romantic expedients: the passionate love story of the great priest's daughter Tahoser and the Pharaoh set in a Biblical Egypt which, however, disappeared in the ballet, and the Gothic taste for gloomy corridors and dark tombs.

The theme of the Lady of the Camellias is a love story between Marguerite Gautier, a " demi-mondaine " (" courtisane " in the original French, i. e., a woman " kept " by various lovers, frequently more than one at a time ) suffering from tuberculosis (" phthisie " in the novel ), and a young provincial bourgeois, Armand Duval.

It is generally accepted to have been promoted by Théophile Gautier in France, who interpreted the phrase to suggest that there was not any real association between art and morality.

A fragment of the past or a puff of opium-a familiar influence in the works and lives of contemporary artists, such as De Quincey-gave Gautier the possibility of adding a brighter aura to his characters by setting them on the borderline between life and death from which all Egyptian art took nourishment.

Rops's association with Baudelaire and with the art he represented won his work the admiration of many other writers, including Théophile Gautier, Alfred de Musset, Stéphane Mallarmé, Jules Barbey d ’ Aurevilly, and Joséphin Péladan.

Théophile Gautier used Berbiguier as a model for his fantastic story, Onuphrius ; ou les vexations fantastiques d ' un admirateur d ' Hoffmann, and Gustave Flaubert similarly consulted Berbiguier's work for his tale of Bouvard et Pécuchet.

Of his life nothing is known, though he is certainly the illegitimate child of a noble or upper-class bourgeouis family, but his family is not to be identified with the noble family Arras or with the bourgeouis family of Louchart, also from Arras ; Audefroi himself is not to be identified with Gautier d ' Arras.

He was a friend of the Romantic poets Alfred de Musset, Victor Hugo and Théophile Gautier, and his atelier was a center, presided over by his beautiful mistress, Juliette Drouet, who became Hugo's mistress in 1833.

First he takes another French mistress named Lucille Gautier.
