Gordon published a scholarly edition of the Middle English text of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ; a revised edition of this text was prepared by Norman Davis and published in 1967.

The murder of Aëtius in 454 differs from the historical version ; Valiant and Gawain are blamed for the murder and must flee.

Scholars are not entirely convinced that the later character of Gawain is derived from the Welsh Gwalchmei ap Gwyar, but later Welsh writers clearly thought this was the case ; the name " Gwalchmei " consistently substitutes for " Gawain " in Cymric translations and adaptations of foreign works, such as the Welsh Romances of the Mabinogion.

In general, Middle English poets were somewhat loose about the number of stresses ; in Sir Gawain, for instance, there are many lines with additional alliterating stresses ( e. g. l. 2, " the borgh brittened and brent to brondez and askez "), and the medial pause is not always strictly maintained.

Sir Gawain thus transformed the Loathly lady ; although he was told that this was half-way, she could at his choice be beautiful by day and hideous by night, or vice versa, he told her that he would choose what she preferred, which broke the spell entirely.

Chrétien uses him as a scoffer and a troublemaker ; a foil for heroic knights like Lancelot, Ywain, or Gawain.

Gawain challenges Lancelot to a duel, but loses and asks Lancelot to kill him ; Lancelot refuses and grants him mercy before leaving.

Its author appears also to have written the poems Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Patience, and Cleanness ; some scholars suggest the author may also have composed Saint Erkenwald.

In later Welsh Arthurian literature, Gawain is considered synonymous with the native champion Gwalchmei ap Gwyar ; Gwyar ( meaning " gore " or " spilled blood / bloodshed ") in Gwalchmei is likely the name of Gwalchmei's mother, rather than his father as is the standard in the Welsh Triads.

This leads to the final tragedy of Arthur's Round Table ; Gawain refuses to allow King Arthur ( his uncle ) to accept Lancelot's sincere apology for the deaths of his two brothers.

This toponymical connection parallels Geoffrey's association of King Leir with Leicester and Coel with Colchester, and William of Malmesbury's assertion that Gawain was king of Galloway ; in the Middle Ages no principle of historiography was more solidly established than the idea that places took their names from persons.

Her oldest daughter, here named Morgause, is married off to King Lot ; they have five sons, Gawain, Agravain, Gaheris, Gareth, and Mordred ( whose biological father, unbeknown to Lot, is actually Arthur ).

Birtwistle's method of working is also reflected in the events of the first Act of his opera Gawain.

According to Geoffrey, Igraine also bore a daughter Anna ( referred to as Morgause in other works ) to Uther Pendragon, this Anna later becoming the mother of Gawain and Mordred.

Yet Geoffrey also refers to King Hoel of Brittany as Arthur's nephew and presents a prophecy that to Uther's daughter will be born a line of seven kings, something true if Hoel is Anna's son, but not true if only Gawain or Mordred are Anna's sons.

Outside of his Middle-earth works, Tolkien also worked on alliterative modern English translations of several Middle English poems by the Pearl Poet: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo.

These hermits are sometimes also vegetarians for ascetic reasons, as suggested in a passage from Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d ' Arthur: ' Then departed Gawain and Ector as heavy ( sad ) as they might for their misadventure ( mishap ), and so rode till that they came to the rough mountain, and there they tied their horses and went on foot to the hermitage.

The beheading challenge is also central to the Middle English Arthurian poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Gawain sacrifices his Pendragon power in order to partially heal the Knight, and also to spark the creation of another Pendragon group.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was adapted into an opera called Gawain by Harrison Birtwistle, first performed in 1991.

The hero of La Bel Inconnu is the progeny of Gawain and a fairy called Blancemal, and in the Marvels of Rigomer, Gawain is rescued by the fay, Lorie.

There, Gawain leaves the maiden — who in this version is called Ettarde — after the incident with the sword.
