Union Colonel Streight and his men were captured by Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.

In the Kingsbury Commitment, actually a letter from AT & T Vice President Nathan Kingsbury of December 19, AT & T agreed with the Attorney General to divest itself of Western Union, to provide long distance services to independent exchanges under certain conditions and to refrain from acquisitions if the Interstate Commerce Commission objected.

Meanwhile, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest harassed Union forces in the area.

A statue of General Forrest was erected in Memphis's Nathan Bedford Forrest Park.

The commander there, Major General Nathan Mugisha, was wounded in a car bomb attack on 17 September 2009 which left nine soldiers dead.

It pitted a 4, 787-man contingent led by Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest against an 8, 100-strong Union force led by Brigadier General Samuel D. Sturgis.

To the east of the city, there is a Civil War site where Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated Abel Streight and his band of raiders.

On 30 April 1863, Union forces under the command of Colonel Abel Streight won a victory over forces under Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.

It was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who used the location as a campsite for a construction crew completing a railroad between Memphis and Little Rock, shortly after the Civil War.

It is named for Revolutionary War General Nathan Greene.

A Confederate reconnaissance and foraging force commanded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest passed through between November and December 1861.

In a running cavalry clash between Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Union General Sooy Smith, the Federals were defeated just north and west of town.

Admitted to the bar in 1834, he practiced law in Bedford, Indiana, and served four terms in the Indiana General Assembly from 1834 to 1838.

General N. Bedford Forrest and General Abel Streight skirmished briefly in the town on May 1, 1863, and Major General Lovell H. Rousseau and his cavalry occupied the town in July 1864.

Bedford is also home to an automotive plant run by General Motors.

On April 12, 1864, General Forrest led his forces in the attack and capture of Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River in Henning, Tennessee.

A contemporary newspaper account from Jackson, Tennessee, stated that " General Forrest begged them to surrender ," but " not the first sign of surrender was ever given.

I, with several others, tried to stop the butchery, and at one time had partially succeeded, but General Forrest ordered them shot down like dogs and the carnage continued.

One month later, while serving under General Stephen D. Lee, Forrest experienced tactical defeat at the Battle of Tupelo in 1864.

The committee also noted, " The natural tendency of all such organizations is to violence and crime ; hence it was that General Forrest and other men of influence in the state, by the exercise of their moral power, induced them to disband .”
