Two lords – Theobald V, Count of Blois, son of the Count of Champagne, and Geoffrey, Count of Nantes ( brother of Henry II, Duke of Normandy ) – tried to kidnap Eleanor to marry her and claim her lands on Eleanor's way to Poitiers.

One of Eleanor's rumoured lovers had been Henry's own father, Geoffrey V, Count of Anjou, who had advised his son to avoid any involvement with her.

But in 1127 a new alliance was made, and on 22 May at Rouen, Henry I betrothed his daughter Matilda, widow of the emperor Henry V, to Geoffrey the Handsome, son of Fulk, the marriage being celebrated at Le Mans on 2 June 1129.

His eldest son, Geoffrey V the Handsome or " Plantagenet ", succeeded him as count of Anjou ( 1129 – 7 September 1151 ).

Geoffrey V ( 24 August 1113 – 7 September 1151 ), called the Handsome () and Plantagenet, was the Count of Anjou, Touraine, and Maine by inheritance from 1129 and then Duke of Normandy by conquest from 1144.

Geoffrey was the elder son of Fulk V of Anjou and Eremburga de La Flèche, daughter of Elias I of Maine.

On 11 June 1128 Geoffrey married Empress Matilda, the daughter and heiress of King Henry I of England by his first wife Edith of Scotland, and widow of Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor.

Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave follows Geoffrey of Monmouth in calling him Aurelius Ambrosius and portrays him as the father of Merlin, the elder brother of Uther ( hence uncle of Arthur ), an initiate of Mithras, and generally admired by everyone except the Saxons.
