For Gilbert Ryle ( 1949 ), a category ( in particular a " category mistake ") is an important semantic concept, but one having only loose affinities to an ontological category.

Gilbert Ryle, for example, argued that traditional understanding of consciousness depends on a Cartesian dualist outlook that improperly distinguishes between mind and body, or between mind and world.

In 1965, he received his Doctor of Philosophy in philosophy from the University of Oxford, where he studied under Gilbert Ryle and was a member of Hertford College.

Gilbert Ryle is often credited with emphasizing the distinction between knowing how and knowing that in The Concept of Mind.

Some philosophers, such as Dennett, reject both epiphenomenalism and the existence of qualia with the same charge that Gilbert Ryle leveled against a Cartesian " ghost in the machine ", that they too are category mistakes.

During World War II, Hart worked with MI5, a division of British military intelligence, where he renewed Oxford friendships including working with the philosophers Gilbert Ryle and Stuart Hampshire.

The term " category-mistake " was introduced by Gilbert Ryle in his book The Concept of Mind ( 1949 ) to remove what he argued to be a confusion over the nature of mind born from Cartesian metaphysics.

Historically, Meinong has been treated, especially by Gilbert Ryle, as an eccentric whose theory of objects was dealt a death blow in Bertrand Russell's famous essay " On Denoting ".

Also scholars such as Bertrand Russell, Roderick Chisholm, George Edward Moore, Gilbert Ryle, John Searle, Barry Smith, Kevin Mulligan, Peter Simons and Jan Woleński have propagated Brentano's influence to analytic philosophy through their research, editions and publications.

The Happy Land ( Court Theatre, 1873 ), a daring political satire and burlesque of W. S. Gilbert's The Wicked World, was written in collaboration with Gilbert, who wrote under the pseudonym F. L. Tomline.

Gilbert, who wrote the words, created fanciful " topsy-turvy " worlds for these operas where each absurdity is taken to its logical conclusion — fairies rub elbows with British lords, flirting is a capital offence, gondoliers ascend to the monarchy, and pirates turn out to be noblemen who have gone wrong.

Gilbert worked with Frederic Clay on Happy Arcadia ( 1872 ) and with Alfred Cellier on Topsyturveydom ( 1874 ), and wrote The Wicked World ( 1873 ) Sweethearts ( 1874 ) and several other libretti, farces, extravaganzas, fairy comedies, dramas and adaptations.

In 1874, Gilbert wrote a short libretto on commission from producer – conductor Carl Rosa, whose wife would have played the leading role, but her death in childbirth cancelled the project.

In 1880, Sullivan wrote the cantata The Martyr of Antioch, presented at the Leeds Triennial Music Festival, with a libretto modified by Gilbert from an 1822 epic poem by Henry Hart Milman concerning the martyrdom of St. Margaret of Antioch in the 3rd century.

Gilbert wrote, " The Mikado of the opera was an imaginary monarch of a remote period and cannot by any exercise of ingenuity be taken to be a slap on an existing institution.

Gilbert wrote a comic play titled Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, in which Guildenstern helps Rosencrantz vie with Hamlet to make Ophelia his bride.

His maternal grandfather was General Peter Gansevoort, a hero of the Battle of Saratoga ; in his gold-laced uniform, the general sat for a portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart, which is described in Melville's 1852 novel, Pierre, for Melville wrote out of his familial as well as his nautical background.

Romantic friendships were also popular in the U. S. Enigmatic poet Emily Dickinson wrote over 300 letters and poems to Susan Gilbert, who later became her sister-in-law, and engaged in another romantic correspondence with Kate Scott Anthon.

W. S. Gilbert wrote a burlesque adaptation of the opera, La Vivandière, in 1867.

In addition, Sousa wrote a march based on themes from Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera The Mikado, the elegant overture Our Flirtations, a number of musical suites, etc.

Also in 1871, Sullivan wrote his first opera with W. S. Gilbert, Thespis.

He later wrote to dramatist W. S. Gilbert, " I envy your position but I could never attain it.

George Bernard Shaw wrote that Gilbert, who had earlier adapted Offenbach's Les brigands, drew on that work also for his new libretto.

The parties were at a stalemate, and Gilbert wrote, " And so ends a musical & literary association of seven years ' standing — an association of exceptional reputation — an association unequalled in its monetary results, and hitherto undisturbed by a single jarring or discordant element.

At the time they wrote Iolanthe, both Gilbert and Sullivan were in their peak creative years, and Iolanthe, their seventh work together, drew the best from both composer and author.

The Oxford edition has led to an increased interest in the opera as Gilbert and Sullivan wrote it, and has also made it easier to restore passages deleted from the opera.

The skill with which Gilbert and Sullivan used their performers had an effect on the audience ; as critic Herman Klein wrote: " we secretly marvelled at the naturalness and ease with which Gilbertian quips and absurdities were said and done.

One of the gadflies of Aestheticism, W. S. Gilbert, introduced Harlequin and Pierrot as love-struck twin brothers into Eyes and No Eyes, or The Art of Seeing ( 1875 ), for which Thomas German Reed wrote the music.
