Sproat Lake was named after Gilbert Sproat and Stamp Falls and Stamp River were named after Edward Stamp.

In November 1961 in Fortune magazine, an article by Gilbert Burck appeared that outlined the plans of Nelson Rockefeller, Edward Teller, Herman Kahn, and Chet Holifield for an enormous network of concrete lined underground fallout shelters throughout the United States sufficient to shelter millions of people to serve as a refuge in case of nuclear war.

One very famous colonial officer in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony was Sir Arthur Grimble ( 1888 – 1956 ), at first as a cadet officer in 1914, under Edward Carlyon Eliot who was Resident Commissioner of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands colony from 1913 to 1920.

In December 1818, Ensign Edward Gilbert arrived with his regiment, the 25th Regiment and met Eliza Oliver ; they were married on 29 April 1820.

Margaret de Clare, Countess of Cornwall, Countess of Gloucester ( October 1293 – April 1342 ), was an English noblewoman, heiress, and the second eldest of the three daughters of Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford and his wife, Joan of Acre, making her a granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

After discussions with Edward Hayes and William Cox, captain and master of the Golden Hind, Gilbert had decided on 31 August to return.

His Critical history of England ( 1724-1726 ) contains attacks on Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon and a defence of Bishop Gilbert Burnet, and its publication led to a controversy between Dr Zachary Grey and the author, who replied to Grey in his Clarendon and Whitlock compared ( 1727 ).

* In Fire in the Abyss by Stuart Gordon ( 1983 ), Humphrey Gilbert is the main character, and is transported four hundred years into the future.

The intrigued King agrees and is transported to a remote island ( Malta, where the entire film was shot ) where he meets his subject, Preston Gilbert ( Mickey Rooney ), a one-time movie star known for playing gangsters and notorious for hanging out with real-life mobsters off the set.

The story is often told that in 1755, Nathaniel Gilbert, while convalescing, read a treatise of John Wesley, " An Appeal to men of Reason and Religion " sent to him by his brother Francis.

The activities men were involved in were often those that provided them with more access to or control of resources and decision making power, rendering men not only superior dispositional attributes via correspondence bias ( Gilbert, 1998 ), but also higher status and authority as society progressed.

An entry in the Great Domesday Book of 1086 lists Evesham, mentioning " Two free men ; Two radmen ; Abbey of St Mary of Evesham ; Abbey of St Mary of Pershore ; Edmund, Abbot of St Mary of Pershore ; Walter, Abbot of St Mary of Evesham ; Aethelwig, Abbot of St Mary of Evesham ; King William as donor ; Odo, Bishop of Bayeux ; Ranulph ; Turstin, Abbot of St Mary of Pershore ; Walter Ponther ; Westminster, Gilbert Crispin, Abbot of St Peter.

By 1572 Gilbert had turned his attention to the Netherlands, where he fought an unsuccessful campaign in support of the Dutch Sea beggars at the head of a force of 1500 men, many of whom had deserted from Smith's aborted plantation in the Ards of Ulster.

* Gilbert was part of a remarkable generation of Devonshire men, who combined the roles of adventurer, writer, soldier and mariner-often in ways as equally loathsome as admirable.

: Gilbert was certainly an interesting psychological case, with the symptoms of disturbed personality that often go with men of mark, not at all the simple Elizabethan seaman of Froude's Victorian view.

A logging operator named Emmons Peck from Carbondale, Pennsylvania, would ship tanning bark and nine million feet of lumber from his mill at Gilbert Lake by horse and wagon to the Laurens station by 1909, employing many men.

They eventually escaped across the Waal at Groot-Ammers, 25 miles west of Arnhem on a route later used by another 37 men, including Gilbert Kirschen.

The lawsuit, however, had left Gilbert and Sullivan somewhat embittered, and their last two works together suffered from a less collegial working relationship than the two men had typically enjoyed while writing earlier operas.

When the meeting was interrupted by two Illinois state troopers, Fred McAllister and Gilbert Cross, Nelson fired on their vehicle with his converted " machine gun pistol ", wounding both men as the gangsters retreated.

The Cistercians declined, apparently because they felt unable to administer houses for both men and women, but Pope Eugenius III, himself a Cistercian, intervened to ask the abbot, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, to assist Gilbert in drawing up Institutes for a new Order.

The four men who survived the disaster were: John Gilbert, Robert Ladd, Henry John Brockman and Joe Epps, the veteran who had also survived the occasion of the 1866 capsize of the previous Margate Surfboat, and who lived on to the age of 93.

Its importance declined even more, once the written word became the focus of rhetoric, although after the eighteenth century it again saw more interest in the works of men such as Gilbert Austin.
