Gilbert and Sullivan introduced innovations in content and form that directly influenced the development of musical theatre through the 20th century.

At a rehearsal for one of these entertainments, Ages Ago ( 1869 ), the composer Frederic Clay introduced Gilbert to his friend, the young composer Arthur Sullivan.

Romantic friendships were also popular in the U. S. Enigmatic poet Emily Dickinson wrote over 300 letters and poems to Susan Gilbert, who later became her sister-in-law, and engaged in another romantic correspondence with Kate Scott Anthon.

The only exceptions were ballad operas, such as John Gay's The Beggar's Opera ( 1728 ), musical burlesques, European operettas, and late Victorian era light operas, notably the Savoy Operas of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, all of which types of musical entertainments frequently spoofed operatic conventions.

W. S. Gilbert wrote a burlesque adaptation of the opera, La Vivandière, in 1867.

Victorian era dramatist W. S. Gilbert remarked, " Deer-stalking would be a very fine sport if only the deer had guns ".

W. S. Gilbert, writing in Fun magazine, pronounced the score superior to F. C. Burnand's libretto.

At the end of 1871, the impresario John Hollingshead commissioned Sullivan to work with W. S. Gilbert to create the burlesque-style comic opera Thespis for the Gaiety Theatre.
