In 1938 Walter Krivitsky, ( born Samuel Ginsberg ) a former GRU officer in Paris who had defected to France the previous year, travelled to the United States and published an account of his time in " Stalin's secret service.

After returning there, he formed a number of grassroots organizations based on the notion of self-reliance: Zanempilo, the Zimele Trust Fund ( which helped support former political prisoners and their families ), Njwaxa Leather-Works Project and the Ginsberg Education Fund.

Other notable figures who appeared in the series include Rudolph Giuliani ( then the mayor of New York City ), former mayor Ed Koch, former New York governor Mario Cuomo, former U. S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, poet Allen Ginsberg, novelists Alfred Kazin and Brendan Gill, director Martin Scorsese, journalist Pete Hamill, former Congresswoman Bella Abzug, historian Niall Ferguson, philosopher Marshall Berman, writer Fran Lebowitz, engineer Leslie E. Robertson, high wire artist Philippe Petit, and billionaire Donald Trump.

Among the people who participated in the vigil at one point or another were former congressman and future governor Mike Lowry, then-city-councilperson Sue Donaldson, 1960s icon Timothy Leary, and beat poet Allen Ginsberg.

The affordability, urban character and eclectic architecture made the area appealing to young bohemians, artists, musicians ( Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg were former neighborhood residents ) which has led to a gradual gentrification that reached its height during the 2000s.

In another recent case of Goodyear Dunlop Tires Operations, S. A. v. Brown Justice Ginsberg held that for the exercise of general jurisdiction in personam, the defendant must be ' essentially at home '.

Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey while staying at the Chelsea, and poets Allen Ginsberg, and Gregory Corso chose it as a place for philosophical and intellectual exchange.

In 1978, Anderson performed at The Nova Convention, a major conference involving many counter-culture figures and rising avant-garde musical stars, including William S. Burroughs, Philip Glass, Frank Zappa, Timothy Leary, Malcolm Goldstein, John Cage, and Allen Ginsberg.

Ginsberg mentions Shelley's Adonais at the beginning of Kaddish, and cites it as a major influence on the composition of one of his most important poems.

While some of the original Beats embraced the beatniks, or at least found the parodies humorous ( Ginsberg, for example, appreciated the parody in Pogo ) others criticized the beatniks as inauthentic posers.

Their association with or tutelage under Ginsberg at The Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and later at Brooklyn College stressed the social-activist legacy of the Beats and created its own body of literature.

Norman Podhoretz, a student at Columbia with Kerouac and Ginsberg, later became a critic of the Beats.

Allen Ginsberg wrote drafts of the poem " Howl " in mid-1954 to 1955, purportedly at a coffeehouse known today as the Caffe Mediterraneum in Berkeley, California.

The reading was conceived by Wally Hedrick — a painter and co-founder of the Six — who approached Ginsberg in mid-1955 and asked him to organize a poetry reading at the Six Gallery.

In response to Ginsberg's reading, McClure wrote: " Ginsberg read on to the end of the poem, which left us standing in wonder, or cheering and wondering, but knowing at the deepest level that a barrier had been broken, that a human voice and body had been hurled against the harsh wall of America ..." Soon afterwards, it was published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who ran City Lights Bookstore and the City Lights Press.

Thus the final collection contained several other poems written at that time ; with these poems, Ginsberg continued the experimentation with long lines and a fixed base he'd discovered with the composition of " Howl " and these poems have likewise become some of Ginsberg's most famous: " America ", " Sunflower Sutra ," " A Supermarket in California ", etc.

Ginsberg and Snyder, after hitch-hiking from San Francisco, read from their poems in the Anna Mann dormitory at Reed College, Snyder's alma mater.

It is directly addressed to Carl Solomon, whom Ginsberg met during a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital in 1949 ; called " Rockland " in the poem, it was actually Columbia Presbyterian Psychological Institute.

In that sworn statement, the organizers indicated that " Einhorn, given a small role on the stage at Earth Day, grabbed the microphone and refused to give up the podium for thirty minutes " During Einhorn ’ s murder trial, one of the Earth Day organizing committee members, psychiatrist Donald Nathanson, took the stand and under oath testified that the committee had barred Einhorn from their discussions, considering him a nuisance .. Again, under oath and penalty of perjury, Dr. Nathanson said there was no master of ceremonies and Einhorn ’ s only role at the event had been as a liaison with poet and featured speaker Allen Ginsberg.

In 1947, Cassady and his wife moved to New York City, where they met Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg at Columbia University through Hal Chase, another protégé of Justin W. Brierly's.

Carolyn originally dated Jack Kerouac and would leave the Beat group shortly after walking in on Neal, Allen Ginsberg and Neal's wife at the time, LuAnne, in bed together.

Cassady shared an apartment with Allen Ginsberg and Charles Plymell in 1963 at 1403 Gough Street, San Francisco.

The origins of the Beat Generation can be traced to Columbia University and the meeting of Kerouac, Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, Hal Chase and others.

While attending Columbia, Ginsberg scrawled the phrases " Butler Has No Balls " and " Fuck The Jews " in the grime on his dirty dorm window in Hartley Hall.

" This incident was among the reasons that Ginsberg was suspended from Columbia.

Many of the poets, including Koch, Ashberry, Ginsberg, and Kerouac attended Columbia University.

These included: William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, Herbert Huncke, Vickie Russell ( a prostitute and addict who appears as " Mary " in Burroughs ' novel Junkie ), and Hal Chase, a Columbia University graduate student from Denver.

In April 2006, the ULA protested against the reading of Allen Ginsberg ’ s Howl at Miller Theater at Columbia University, which was hosted by elite literati and had no representation of the " underground ", from which the Beat Generation had sprung.

It was also at Columbia that Carr befriended Allen Ginsberg in the Union Theological Seminary dormitory on 122nd street ( an overflow residence for Columbia ), when Ginsberg knocked on the door to find out who was playing a recording of a Brahms trio.

Soon after the killing, Allen Ginsberg began a novel about the crime which he called The Bloodsong, but his English instructor at Columbia, seeking to preclude more negative publicity for Carr or the university, persuaded Ginsberg to abandon it.

At Columbia, Holman studied with Kenneth Koch, Eric Bentley, and Michael Wood but claims that his “ major poetry schooling ,” was “ the Lower East Side, with Allen Ginsberg, John Giorno, Anne Waldman, Miguel Piñero, Hettie Jones, Ed Sanders, Amiri Baraka, Ted Berrigan, Alice Notley, Pedro Pietri, David Henderson, Steve Cannon, et al .”

Together with Eli Ginsberg, a professor of economics at Columbia, Eichner authored an economic history of African Americans, The Troublesome Presence: The American Democracy and the Negro, published in 1964.

Born to Jewish immigrant parents in New York, Hollander attended Columbia College of Columbia University, where he studied under Mark Van Doren and Lionel Trilling, and overlapped with Allen Ginsberg.

Ginsberg, Waldman, and di Prima were also teachers at Naropa University.

In 1974, with Trungpa, Ginsberg, and others, Waldman founded the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado ( now Naropa University ), where she remains a Distinguished Professor of Poetics and the Director of Naropa's famous Summer Writing Program.

Her archive of historical, literary, art, tape, and extensive correspondence materials ( including many prominent literary correspondents, such as: William S. Burroughs, Robert Creeley, Diane Di Prima, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, and Ken Kesey ) resides at the University of Michigan's Special Collections Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In particular, Ginsberg wanted to counter the " specter " of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang who supported the war, equated war protesters with communists and had threatened to violently disrupt planned anti-war demonstrations at the University of California, Berkeley.

According to Dr. Shankar Bhattacharya, Dean at Assam University, as well as Aryanil Mukherjee, editor of Kaurab Literary Periodical, the movement influenced Allen Ginsberg as much as it influenced American poetry through the Beat poets who visited Calcutta, Patna and Benares during the 1960s decade.

In 1974, Ginsberg helped found The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, where themes that contributed to emergent Mayanism were explored in literature and art.

The library was curated by Michael Aldrich, holder of the first Ph. D. ever granted from an American University in the history of cannabis, and included on its board of advisors a number of eminent researches and writers, including Chauncey Leake, Richard Evans Schultes, Albert Hofmann, Alexander Shulgin, Andrew Weil, Oscar Janiger, Ralph Metzner, Laura Huxley, Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
