The CPR had constructed smaller hotels in 1886 to accommodate travellers, including: Glacier House in Glacier in the Rogers Pass, Mount Stephen Hotel in Field, B. C.

Some of the lesser pioneer hostelries were designed primarily to provide meal service for passengers in the Rocky Mountains where railway grades were too severe to justify the operation of dining cars ( see the Big Hill ), although Glacier House and the Sicamous Hotel were destination hotels in their own right.

A very considerable outlyer, whose chief summits are the Schärhorn and the Gross Windgällen, belonging to the canton of Uri, is connected with the Tödi by the range of the Clariden, north to the Hüfi Glacier.

The central mass of the mountain is enclosed between two glaciers, of which the most considerable is the Biferten Glacier.

The great Aletsch Glacier shows considerable ice cover.

Mistakenly assuming their ground speed to be faster than it really was, the crew may have deduced that they had already safely crossed the Andes, and so commenced their descent to Santiago, whereas in fact they were still a considerable distance to the east-north-east and were approaching the cloud-shrouded Tupungato Glacier at high speed.

From the buttress it was necessary to descend a little in order to reach the Guggi Glacier, which could be ascended without meeting serious obstacles as far as a considerable plateau, scarcely seen from the Wengern Alp.

Four T-bars service the Horstman Glacier and the Whistler alpine regions and take skiers to the entrance to Blackcomb Glacier.

The view, on one side, commands the icy plains of the Aletsch Glacier, and the highest alpine peaks far and near ; on the other overlooks populous valleys that lie at a depth of 2 miles below the spectator's feet.

Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier falls on its 13 km journey from the Southern Alps down to the coast, with it having the distinction of being one of the few glaciers to end among lush rainforest only above sea level.

Kokanee Lake is one of over 30 alpine lakes located in British Columbia's Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park.

The main centres include: Rocca Pietore alongside the Marmolada Glacier, which lies on the border of Trentino and Veneto, the small towns of Alleghe, Falcade, Auronzo, Cortina d ' Ampezzo and the villages of Arabba, Urtijëi and San Martino di Castrozza, as well as the whole of the Fassa, Gardena and Badia valleys.

Thus the Tschingel Glacier and the Kander Glacier, separate the portion of the main range lying between the Gemmi Pass and the Mittaghorn from the equally high parallel range of the Doldenhorn and Blümlisalp on its northern side.

In the Eastern Alps the longest glacier is the Pasterze Glacier ( rather over 6¼ miles ), which is not near the true main watershed, though it clings to the slope of the Grossglockner ( 3, 798 m ) in the Hohe Tauern range east of the Dreiherrenspitze.

The main Aletsch Glacier originates from Konkordiaplatz.

The Masherbrum Mountains lie to the south of the Baltoro Glacier and the main range of the Karakoram lies to the north of the Baltoro.

Several miles downriver from there the White River is joined by one of its main tributaries, the West Fork White River, which also originates at a glacier in Mount Rainier National Park, in this case, Winthrop Glacier.

If the lengths of the North Fork Flathead, main Flathead, Clark Fork and Pend Oreille are added together, the total is over stretching from the Rocky Mountains north of Glacier National Park to the Canada-U. S. border south of Montrose, British Columbia.

Fox Glacier township / Weheka, 6 km away from the glacier, functions mainly as a service centre for tourists, though it also services the local farming community, which had been its main focus until the 1990s ( though tourism started as early as the late 1920s ).

A northern distributary, Kohler Glacier, drains to Dotson Ice Shelf but the main flow passes to the sea between Bear Peninsula and Mount Murphy, terminating at Crosson Ice Shelf.

Near West Glacier the North Fork combines with the Middle Fork to form the main Flathead River.

The expeditions are also meant to show to the international audience that Indian troops hold " almost all dominating heights " on the key Saltoro Ridge and to show that Pakistani troops are not within 15 km of the main 70 km-long Siachen Glacier.

The party passed the night in some holes in the rocks above the Mittel Aletsch Glacier ( on the east side of the mountain ), and on the following morning, on 18 June, started the ascent and reached the snow arête connecting the Dreieckhorn with the main peak.

Several large tributary glaciers feed the main Baltoro glacier, including the Godwin Austen Glacier, flowing south from K2 ; the Abruzzi and the various Gasherbrum Glaciers, flowing from the Gasherbrum group of peaks ; the Vigne Glacier, flowing from Chogolisa, and the Yermandendu Glacier, flowing from Masherbrum.

The confluence of the main Baltoro Glacier with the Godwin Austen Glacier is known as Concordia ; this location and K2 base camp are popular trekking destinations.

It rises in the Rocky Mountains in Glacier National Park at the continental divide and flows ENE onto the foothills and plains of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, then southeast, past Cut Bank, Montana where it forms a spectacular scenic gorge deep spanned by an elevated railway bridge just a mile from the town's Amtrak rail transport system passenger station and BNSF railway freight yards.

The lone remaining Chicago to Seattle / Portland passenger train today is Amtrak's Empire Builder which primarily traverses much of the former Great Northern route west of St. Paul, Minnesota via Grand Forks and Minot, ND ; Havre, Whitefish, and Glacier National Park in Montana ; and Wenatchee and Everett in Washington State.

Today, Glacier National Park operates 33 of their original 35 buses, where they are referred to as " Red Jammers ", and 8 ( of an original 98 ) have been restored for renewed service in Yellowstone National Park.

To replace the funicular, GletscherjetI ( Glacier Jet I ), a 24-person funitel, was brought into service on 23 December 2001.

According to an inventory conducted in the late 1970s, the Southern Alps contained over 3000 glaciers larger than a hectare, the longest of which – the Tasman Glacier – is 29 kilometres in length down towards Lake Pukaki.

Around 1820 the entire Zugspitzplatt was glaciated, but of this Platt Glacier ( Plattgletscher ) only the Northern and Southern Schneeferner remain.

The headwaters are from the La Perouse Glacier on the western flanks of the Southern Alps, and it flows west, then northeast, then northwest and into the Tasman Sea.

Together with the Fox Glacier to the south, it is unique in descending from the Southern Alps to less than above sea level, amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest.

Partly in Mount Aspiring National Park, it flows south-west and then south for from its headwaters in the Southern Alps and the Dart Glacier, eventually flowing into the northern end of Lake Wakatipu near Glenorchy.

The Tasman Glacier is the largest of several glaciers which flow south and east towards the Mackenzie Basin from the Southern Alps in New Zealand's South Island.

Hooker Glacier is one of several glaciers close to the slopes of Aoraki / Mount Cook in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

So named by the Southern Party of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition ( NZGSAE ) ( 1961 – 62 ) because it was at this landfall that the party arrived after their first crossing of Mill Glacier in November 1961.

Named by the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee ( NZ-APC ) for Walter W. Herbert, leader of the Southern Party of the New Zealand GSAE ( 1961 – 62 ) which explored the Axel Heiberg Glacier area.
