Many of Gladys Knight and the Pips ' hits in the mid-1970s were written by country songwriter Jim Weatherly.
Gladys Knight & the Pips ' debut LP on Buddah, Imagination, was certified as a gold record.

While at Motown in 1968, Gladys Knight was the first person to suggest that Berry Gordy sign an up-and-coming act from Gary, Indiana called The Jackson Five ( later known as The Jacksons ).
She is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, for both the Motown and Buddah Records labels, with her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, the most famous incarnation of which also included her brother Merald " Bubba " Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Guest.

Despite their early successes, the group were eclipsed in popularity by groups like The Supremes, with whom they shared an intense rivalry and struggled with issues of dismal promotion from Motown, illnesses and mental breakdowns, with Cowart the first to leave in 1963, followed by Georgeanna Tillman two years later and Gladys Horton two years after that.

He found a songwriting collaborator in lyricist Barrett Strong, the performer on Motown's first hit record, " Money ( That's What I Want )", and wrote material for The Temptations and other Motown artists such as Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips, both of whom recorded Whitfield-produced hit versions of the Whitfield / Strong composition " I Heard It Through the Grapevine ".
The Gladys Knight & the Pips version was the best-selling Motown single ever to that point, but it was replaced a year later by Gaye's version.

Together, Strong and Whitfield wrote some of the most successful and critically acclaimed soul songs ever to be released by Motown, including " I Heard It Through the Grapevine " by both Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips ; " War " by Edwin Starr ; " Smiling Faces Sometimes " by The Undisputed Truth ; and the long line of " psychedelic soul " records by The Temptations, including " Cloud Nine ", " I Can't Get Next to You ", " Psychedelic Shack ", " Ball of Confusion ( That's What the World Is Today )", and " Papa Was a Rollin ' Stone ", amongst others.
While Motown 25 was billed as " Yesterday, Today, Forever ", artists from the golden era of Motown, such as The Marvelettes, The Vandellas, The Contours, Marv Johnson, Jimmy Ruffin, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and The Velvelettes were not included in the special, while newer artists such as Debarge, High Inergy and José Feliciano were.
Although Gladys Knight and Bobby Taylor of the Vancouvers had been the ones to bring the Jackson brothers to Motown, Motown credited Ross with discovering them, not only to help promote the Jackson 5, but also to help ease Ross ' transition into a solo career., a career begun soon after the Jackson 5 became a success.
