Many of Gladys Knight and the Pips ' hits in the mid-1970s were written by country songwriter Jim Weatherly.

Gladys Knight & the Pips ' debut LP on Buddah, Imagination, was certified as a gold record.

The following year, the group got their own hour-long musical variety television program, The Gladys Knight & the Pips Show, which ran for four episodes on NBC as a summer-season replacement.

In 1977, the Pips ( minus Gladys ) appeared on comedian Richard Pryor's TV special that aired on NBC.

Gladys Knight & the Pips embarked on their final tour in 1988 and disbanded upon its conclusion, as Gladys Knight decided she wanted to pursue a solo career.

The Pips retired, while Gladys Knight began scoring hits of her own with singles such as " Men " ( 1991 ) and " I Don't Want to Know " ( 1994 ).

Gladys Knight & the Pips are ranked as the ninth most successful act in The Billboard Top 40 Book of R & B and Hip-Hop Hits ( 2005 ).

In June 2006, Gladys Knight & the Pips were inducted into the Apollo Theater's Hall Of Fame in New York City.

As Edward Patten had died two years prior, one of Gladys Knight's current backing singers, Neil Taffe, accompanied the remaining Pips.

Richard Hunt, who, in Jon Stone's words, joined the Muppets as a " wild-eyed 18-year-old and grew into a master puppeteer and inspired teacher ", created Gladys the Cow, Forgetful Jones, Don Music, and the construction worker Sully.

In January 2001, Gerald appears again in the series finale " Always and Forever " where Jamie ( Jamie Foxx ) and Fancy ( Garcelle Beauvais ) got married and sang the opening ceremony at the wedding and joined by fellow singers Gladys Knight and Marilyn McCoo ( without her husband Billy Davis, Jr .).

His work includes Motown hits such as, among hundreds of others, " Shotgun " by Jr. Walker & the All Stars, " For Once in My Life ", " I Was Made To Love Her " by Stevie Wonder ( sometimes noted as being claimed by Carol Kaye, Ms Kaye actually claims the track on the late 60s Beach Boys version of the same song ), " Going to a Go-Go " by The Miracles, " My Girl " by The Temptations, " Dancing in the Street " by Martha and the Vandellas, " I Heard It Through the Grapevine " by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and later by Marvin Gaye, and most of the album What's Going On by Marvin Gaye, " Reach Out I'll Be There " and " Bernadette " by the Four Tops, and " You Can't Hurry Love " by The Supremes.

Despite their early successes, the group were eclipsed in popularity by groups like The Supremes, with whom they shared an intense rivalry and struggled with issues of dismal promotion from Motown, illnesses and mental breakdowns, with Cowart the first to leave in 1963, followed by Georgeanna Tillman two years later and Gladys Horton two years after that.

He found a songwriting collaborator in lyricist Barrett Strong, the performer on Motown's first hit record, " Money ( That's What I Want )", and wrote material for The Temptations and other Motown artists such as Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips, both of whom recorded Whitfield-produced hit versions of the Whitfield / Strong composition " I Heard It Through the Grapevine ".

The Gladys Knight & the Pips version was the best-selling Motown single ever to that point, but it was replaced a year later by Gaye's version.

Other Motown artists whom Ashford & Simpson worked with include Gladys Knight & The Pips (" Didn't You Know You'd Have to Cry Sometime ", " The Landlord ", " Bourgie, Bourgie ", and " Taste of Bitter Love "), Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (" Who's Gonna Take the Blame "), The Marvelettes (" Destination: Anywhere "), The Supremes (" Some Things You Never Get Used To "), and The Dynamic Superiors (" Shoe, Shoe Shine ").

Together, Strong and Whitfield wrote some of the most successful and critically acclaimed soul songs ever to be released by Motown, including " I Heard It Through the Grapevine " by both Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips ; " War " by Edwin Starr ; " Smiling Faces Sometimes " by The Undisputed Truth ; and the long line of " psychedelic soul " records by The Temptations, including " Cloud Nine ", " I Can't Get Next to You ", " Psychedelic Shack ", " Ball of Confusion ( That's What the World Is Today )", and " Papa Was a Rollin ' Stone ", amongst others.

While Motown 25 was billed as " Yesterday, Today, Forever ", artists from the golden era of Motown, such as The Marvelettes, The Vandellas, The Contours, Marv Johnson, Jimmy Ruffin, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and The Velvelettes were not included in the special, while newer artists such as Debarge, High Inergy and José Feliciano were.

Although Gladys Knight and Bobby Taylor of the Vancouvers had been the ones to bring the Jackson brothers to Motown, Motown credited Ross with discovering them, not only to help promote the Jackson 5, but also to help ease Ross ' transition into a solo career., a career begun soon after the Jackson 5 became a success.
