The publication of Saducismus Triumphatus, an anti-sceptical tract that has been implicated in the moral panic at Salem, involved Joseph Glanvill ( a latitudinarian ), Henry More ( a Cambridge Platonist ) as editor, and Anthony Horneck, an evangelical German Anglican, as translator of a pamphlet about a Swedish witch hunt ; and none of these was a Puritan.

Latitudinarians generally respected the Cambridge Platonists, and Glanvill was friendly with and much influenced by Henry More, a leader in that group where Glanvill was a follower.

In the matter of the Drummer of Tedworth, a report of poltergeist-type activity from 1662-3, More and Glanvill had in fact already corresponded about it in 1663.

Like More, Glanvill believed that the existence of spirits was well documented in the Bible, and that the denial of spirits and demons was the first step towards atheism.

Israel cites a letter from More to Glanvill, from 1678 and included in Sadducismus Triumphatus, in which he says that followers of Thomas Hobbes and Baruch Spinoza use scepticism about " spirits and angels " to undermine belief in the Scripture mentioning them.

More agreed with Glanvill on belief in witchcraft and apparitions.

However, the first common law scholars, most notably Glanvill and Bracton, as well as the early royal common law judges, had been well accustomed with Roman law.

The tale Glanvill told was that a local landowner, John Mompesson, owner of a house in the town of Tedworth ( now called Tidworth, in Wiltshire ), had brought a lawsuit against a local drummer, whom he accused of extorting money by false pretences.

It developed as a compendium ( with multiple authorship ) from Philosophical Considerations Touching the Being of Witches and Witchcraft ( 1666 ), addressed to Robert Hunt, a Justice of the Peace active from the 1650s against witches in Somerset ( where Glanvill had his living at Frome ); the 1668 version A Blow at Modern Sadducism promoted the view that the judicial procedures such as Hunt's court offered should be taken as adequate tests of evidence, because to argue otherwise was to undermine society at its legal roots.

It was also taken as a target when Francis Hutchinson set down An Historical Essay Concerning Witchcraft ( 1718 ); both books made much of reports from Sweden, and included by Glanvill as editor, which had experienced a moral panic about witchcraft after 1668.

After the death of Henry in 1189, Glanvill was removed from his office by Richard I on 17 September 1189 and imprisoned until he had paid a ransom, according to one authority, of £ 15, 000.

Glanvill described one action which had features of both debt and detinue.

" He was unhorsed and captured by Henry's troops led by Ranulf de Glanvill and taken in chains to Newcastle, then Northampton, and then transferred to Falaise in Normandy.

At the side of the broad shady road called Rotten Row, leading from the West Lodge to Bailiffgate, a tablet of stone marks the spot where William the Lion of Scotland was captured in 1174, during the second Battle of Alnwick by a party of about four hundred mounted knights, led by Ranulf de Glanvill ; and there are many others of similar interest.

The eldest brother, Theobald Walter, and Walter himself, were helped in their careers by their uncle, Ranulf de Glanvill.

Works by men such as Glanvill and Cotton Mather tried to prove to humanity that " demons were alive ", which played on the fears of individuals who believed that demons were active among them on Earth.

Walter owed his early advancement to his uncle Ranulf de Glanvill, who helped him become a clerk of the Exchequer.

Glanvill was the chief justiciar for Henry II ; and was married to Maud de Valoignes ' sister, Bertha.

In 1187 Walter, along with Glanvill and King Henry II, attempted to mediate a dispute between the Archbishop of Canterbury, Baldwin of Forde, and the monks of the cathedral chapter.

At about the same time Glanvill was either forced out of his justiciarship or resigned, but the sources are unclear.

Soon after his appointment, Walter accompanied the king on the Third Crusade, going ahead of the king directly from Marseille to the Holy Land in a group that included Baldwin of Forde, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Ranulf de Glanvill.

W. L. Warren advances the theory that either Walter or Geoffrey Fitz Peter, instead of Ranulf Glanvill, was the author of Tractatus de legibus et consuetudinibus regni Angliae, a legal treatise on the laws and constitutions of the English.

Chrimes agrees that Glanvill was probably not the author, and feels that Walter likely was, although he could not be certain.
