Goethite often forms through the weathering of other iron-rich minerals, and thus is a common component of soils.

Goethite is found all over the planet, usually in the form of concretions, stalactitic formations, oolites ( a form consisting of tiny round grains cemented together ), reniform ( kidney shapes ) or botryoidal ( globular, like bunches of grapes ) accumulations.

Goethite forms only in the presence of water, so its discovery is the first direct evidence of past water in the Columbia Hills's rocks.

Rust consists of hydrated iron ( III ) oxides Fe < sub > 2 </ sub > O < sub > 3 </ sub >· nH < sub > 2 </ sub > O and iron ( III ) oxide-hydroxide FeO ( OH )· Fe ( OH )< sub > 3 </ sub >.
