Founded in 1887 by the Society of Jesus, it is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and is named after the young Jesuit saint, Aloysius Gonzaga.

The Gonzaga Dramatic Association ( GDA )-One of Gonzaga's oldest and proudest institutions, the Gonzaga Dramatic Association was officially formed in 1863 ( though the school had been putting on plays for the previous forty-two years ).

GDA actors and actresses often go on to accomplish great things in professional theater, and the Gonzaga Dramatic Association Hall of Fame was established in 1999 to honor these individuals ( as well as those who continue to add to the theater at Gonzaga or elsewhere in their lives ).

Ganymede Abducted by the Eagle, one of the four mythological paintings commissioned by Federico II Gonzaga, is a proto-Baroque work due to its depiction of movement, drama, and diagonal compositional arrangement. Aside from his religious output, Correggio conceived a now-famous set of paintings depicting the Loves of Jupiter as described in Ovid's Metamorphoses.

Places worth seeing in the city include the Basilica of Los Angeles, the " Ruins of Santiago Apostle Church ", The City Museum, Maria Auxiliadora church, the Technological Institute of Costa Rica, The Central Market ( especially on Thursdays and Saturdays ), and the main building of San Luis Gonzaga High School, site of the first Central American Supreme Court.

De La Salle College was established as an elementary school and high school for boys on June 16, 1911 by the three Lasallian Brothers ( namely Blimond Pierre Eilenbecker, Aloysius Gonzaga McGiverin and Augusto Correge ) who arrived in Manila on March 1911.

Relations between the Gonzaga and Este families were close, and in the early 1550s Wert traveled at least once to Mantua and Ferrara, centers of musical activity in the late sixteenth century, where he met the renowned madrigalist Cipriano de Rore, who was the most influential figure on his early musical style.
