While Klaatu's body is being put in a jail cell, Gort removes himself from the plastic encasement and kills two guards.

On 21 December Gort recommended to the Chiefs of Staff that Britain would need to help France defend Holland and Belgium and that for that purpose the British Army needed complete equipment for four Regular army infantry divisions and two mobile armoured divisions, with the Territorial army armed with training equipment and then war equipment for four divisions.

After saving Jacob and his mother from Gort, Klaatu sacrifices his physical form to stop Gort, setting off a massive electromagnetic pulse before his body is destroyed.

Helen and Klaatu take a taxi to Barnhardt's home ; en route, Klaatu instructs Helen that, should anything happen to him, she must tell Gort " Klaatu barada nikto ".

Gort then revives Klaatu while the amazed Helen watches.

At the behest of the MPAA, a line was inserted into the film ; when Helen asks Klaatu whether Gort has unlimited power over life and death, Klaatu explains that he has only been revived temporarily and " that power is reserved to the Almighty Spirit.

Klaatu ( Michael Rennie ) commanded Helen Benson ( Patricia Neal ) that, were anything to happen to him, she must utter the phrase to the robot Gort ( Lockard Martin ).

Klaatu tells Helen Benson his concern about Gort and requests she memorize the phrase, saying " There's no limit to what he can do.

" Gort takes Helen inside the spaceship then retrieves Klaatu's lifeless body from the jail and brings him back to life using the alien technology aboard the ship.

Helen reaches the robot, uttering " Gort!

On 27 November 1918, Gort was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, for his actions on 27 September 1918 at the Battle of the Canal du Nord, near Flesquieres, France.

Gort replied: " Lord Kitchener had clearly pointed out that no great country can wage a “ little ” war ".

After Klaatu is revived, he steps out of the saucer, giving the scientists the following ultimatum: Earth can either decide not to threaten aggression on other planets and join other spacefaring worlds — a peace ensured by a massive deterrent force, consisting of robots similar to Gort — or else " this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder ".

Gort gently deposits her in the spaceship, then goes to fetch Klaatu's corpse.

" barely in time to save her own life, whereupon Gort aborts his attack, retrieves Klaatu's body, transports him to the saucer, and revives him from death.

On 26 May, Anthony Eden — the Secretary of State for war — told General Gort that he might need to " fight back to the west ", and ordered him to prepare plans for the evacuation.

Gort had foreseen the order and preliminary plans were already in hand.

Gort had sent General Adam ahead to build the defensive perimeter around Dunkirk, and General Brooke was to conduct a holding action with the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 50th Divisions along the Ypres-Comines canal as far as Yser while the rest of the BEF fell back.

Gort had ordered Sir Ronald Adam, 3rd Corps Commander, and French General Falgade, to prepare a perimeter defence of Dunkirk.

Gort sent the battle-worn 3rd, 4th and 50th Divisions into the line to fill the space the Belgians had held.

While they were still moving into position, they ran headlong into the German 256th Division who were trying to flank Gort.

In response, Gort, a large humanoid robot, emerges from the ship and begins disintegrating the weapons present with a ray coming from a visor-like structure on its head.

Gort continues until Klaatu orders him to stop.

Gort stands by, mute and unmoving.

Klaatu steps out of the spaceship and addresses the assembled scientists, explaining that humanity's penchant for violence and first steps into space have caused concern among other inhabitants of the universe who have created and empowered a race of robot enforcers including Gort to deter such aggression.

The robot Gort, who serves Klaatu, was played by the naturally tall Lock Martin, who worked as an usher at Graumann's Chinese Theater and stood seven feet tall.

Philosophy professor Aeon J. Skoble speculates the famous phrase is a " safe-word " that is part of a fail-safe feature used during the diplomatic missions such as the one Klaatu and Gort make to Earth.

In this interpretation, the phrase apparently tells Gort that Klaatu considers escalation unnecessary.

In this fiction, the aliens intervene in human affairs to prevent them from destroying themselves, such as Klaatu and Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still warning the leaders of Earth to abandon their warlike ways and join other space-faring civilizations else that they will destroy themselves or be destroyed by their interstellar union.
