When Prime Minister John Gorton moved in, Bettina Gorton's practical abilities in farm repairs were soon called on to deal with maintenance issues resulting from some of Zara Holt ’ s more impractical decorating achievements.

But Bettina Gorton ’ s lasting imprint on The Lodge was in the grounds.

In 1953 the American company Gorton-Pew Fisheries, now known as Gorton's, had been the first company to introduce a frozen ready-to-cook fish finger, named Gorton ’ s Fish Sticks, which won the Parents Magazine Seal of Approval.

Gorton ’ s of Gloucester is a subsidiary of the Japanese seafood conglomerate Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd., producing fishsticks and other frozen seafood for the retail market in the United States.

When nearby Rockport ’ s chief industry, the Annisquam Cotton Mill, burned down, Slade Gorton, the mill ’ s superintendent, was out of a job.

At his wife ’ s urging, he began a fishing business in 1874 known as the Slade Gorton & Company, and began to pack and sell salt codfish and mackerel in small kegs.

The company offices were located at 372 Main Street, Gloucester, in the same building where Gorton ’ s Main Office is located today.

In May 1995, Unilever bought Gorton ’ s from General Mills.

In August 2001, Unilever sold Gorton ’ s and BlueWater Seafoods to Nippon Suisan ( USA ), Inc., a subsidiary of Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd., for US $ 175 million in cash.

Master Gorton, having foully abused high and low at Aquidneck is now bewitching and bemaddening poor Providence, both with his unclean and foul censures of all the ministers of this country ( for which myself have in Christ's name withstood him ), and also denying all visible and external ordinances in depth of Familism: almost all suck in his poison, as at first they did at Aquidneck.

He also established the Australian Council for the Arts ( later the Australia Council ), which began the tradition of federal government support for Australian arts and artists, an initiative that was considerably expanded by Holt's successor John Gorton.

A similar attendance was also recorded for a friendly match against Gorton Villa on 5 September 1889.

Being a bitter partisan by nature he used his talent and energy to consolidate many discordant elements of the discontented into a destructive party within the comparatively peaceful settlement established by Williams.

With his success in England, Gorton was seen as a leader in the colony and in 1649 he was chosen as the Warwick assistant to President John Smith, also from Warwick, but both Gorton and Smith declined their positions.

Besides his first book, Simplicities Defence ... Gorton also wrote another book while in England entitled An Incorruptible Key composed of the CX.

Lieutenant Governor and Rhode Island state historian Samuel G. Arnold and New York Lieutenant Governor Lewis S. Chanler also have Gorton as an ancestor.

Other improved superheaters were introduced by John G. Robinson of the Great Central Railway at Gorton locomotive works, by Robert Urie of the London and South Western Railway ( LSWR ) at Eastleigh railway works, and Richard Maunsell of the Southern Railway ( Great Britain ), also at Eastleigh.

Gorton was also the home of the Beyer-Peacock locomotive Company at Gorton Foundry, from 1854, until it closed in 1966.

Gorton is also home to the Greater Manchester Police, Tactical Firearms Unit based at Openshaw Police Station.

The painter Michael Gutteridge was also born in Gorton.

Gorton has also been the birthplace of three Olympians, Jeff Williams a cyclist who went to the 1980 Olympics, Thomas Evenson ( athletics, silver medallist in the 3000 metres steeplechase at Los Angeles in 1932 ) and George Wilkinson a former water polo three time Olympic champion.

He was a leading member of the " Taiwan lobby " in the Liberal Party, which also included Wilfrid Kent Hughes and the young John Gorton.

Metropolitan Vickers also produced electrical equipment for the British Rail Class 76 ( EM1 ), and British Rail Class 77 ( EM2 ), 1. 5KV DC locomotives, built at Gorton Works for the electrification of the Woodhead Line in the early 1950s.

Edward Siddall ( who died in 1588 ) held the capital messuage ( or domain ) called Milkwall Slade, with in Rusholme and Withington and in Gorton, also a burgage in Manchester and a third part of the manor of Kersal in Broughton.

In 1950 – 1953, a further 57 locomotives were built at Gorton locomotive works, Manchester, to a modified design ; these were also classified EM1.

Founded by Samuel Gorton in 1642, Warwick has witnessed major events in American history.

Sir Gerald Bernard Kaufman ( born 21 June 1930 ) is a British Labour Party politician, who has been a Member of Parliament ( MP ) since 1970, first for Manchester Ardwick, and then subsequently for Manchester Gorton.

Kaufman was elected MP for Manchester Ardwick at the 1970 general election and has represented the Manchester Gorton constituency since the 1983 election.

Folklore has it that the names Gorton and Reddish arose from a battle between Saxons and Danes.

Brendan Patrick O ' Connor ( born 2 March 1962 ), Australian politician, has been an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives since November 2001, representing the Division of Burke, Victoria 2001 – 04 and the Division of Gorton since October 2004.

More than a century later, however, Samuel Eddy, the Rhode Island Secretary of State, wrote, " In the case of Gorton, ... no one of the first settlers has received more unmerited reproach, nor any one suffered so much injustice.

Longsight has been in the parliamentary constituency of Manchester Gorton since boundary changes in 1983.

Since then, Gorton has been represented in the House of Commons by the Labour MP, the Rt Hon Sir Gerald Kaufman.

More recently some parts of Gorton have suffered from serious deprivation, which has resulted in high crime levels and burglary.
