Gowen began circa 1847 as a lumbering center and was first known as Gregor's Mills, and later as Kaywood.

As a result, Gowen and Stephanie McMahon were put in a match against The Big Show, in what McMahon billed as the first " real " handicap match ( referring to Gowen and his amputee status in addition to the two vs. one parameters of the match ).

The keyboardist's side projects include reforming National Health in 1981 to produce a memorial album for keyboardist Alan Gowen, producing the hit single ' Hole In My Shoe ' and ' Neil's Heavy Concept Album ' for comedian Nigel Planer ( well known for his hippie character in ' The Young Ones ' TV series ) and producing the first album by Bill Bruford's electro-jazz outfit Earthworks.

It was in these same hearings that Gowen first began to formulate in public discourse his theory that the miners ' union had at its core a murderous criminal association:

Rising above it all, in January of that year Gowen presided over formation of the " coal pool " or " anthracite combination "— including other big coal executives Asa Packer, Thomas Dickson, George Hoyt, and Samuel Sloan — which established " the first industry-wide price-fixing agreement in America.

From his first tangles with the Workingmen's Benevolent Association through the end of his life Franklin Gowen was a bitter and outspoken opponent of organized labor, which was still struggling to get on its feet.

Ultimately, within a month of the first Mollie Maguire hangings ( June 20, 1877 ), the ongoing BLE strike in Reading, which Gowen believed he had broken just as he had the WBA's strike in 1875, gained fresh momentum from the unfolding Great Strike ; tensions in the city escalated until, on July 23, 10 citizens were killed by the Pennsylvania state militia in the Reading Railroad Massacre.

As the Philadelphia coal market continued to decline, Schuylkill County mine operators sent Thomas Baumgardner, who had given Franklin Gowen his first introduction to the coal and iron businesses during his apprenticeship, as part of a committee to get a read on Gowen's intentions.

The first came from the McCalmont faction ; the second from a former vice president of the Reading ; and the third from Franklin Gowen.

By 1875, Gowen had accumulated ( 283 km² ), and Tower accepted his offer of purchase for his lands.

Tower asked for and received $ 3 million from Gowen, for which Tower realized a profit of $ 1. 5 million as per the original contract with the Munson family.

Gowen has competed for World Wrestling Entertainment and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.

Gowen later returned to TNA on May 15, 2005 at their Hard Justice pay-per-view event, as the second entrant in the 20-Man Gauntlet for the Gold match.

Gowen was absent from television for nearly a month, returning in an interview on the October 2 episode of SmackDown promoting his in-ring return for the following week.

In Labor's Untold Story, Richard Boyer and Herbert Morais put the responsibility for creating the Molly Maguires on industrialist Franklin B. Gowen, claiming :" A good number of historians now concede that there was never any organization in Pennsylvania known as the Molly Maguires — although any militant miner might have been called a Molly Maguire after the newspapers had spread Gowen's charge far and wide ".

Gowen, the District Attorney for Schuylkill County, was quoted as making the following comments:

Back at Fawlty Towers, Basil has a confusing conversation with Major Gowen about women, a cricket game and the proper racial slurs for Indians.

Baumgardner liked and came to trust Franklin so that at age 19, Gowen found himself dispatched as clerk ( i. e., bookkeeper ) for that iron business.

" Others argue that Gowen would have diligently prosecuted numerous cases but for his suspects uniformly being furnished with alibis by fellow criminals, some of whom he brought to justice two decades later as Mollie Maguires.

When his own draft number came up that same year, Gowen — by then a father of three — was well-off enough to pay for a substitute, a common practice among those who could afford it.

In an 1866 contract dispute — when Gowen was the Reading's local counsel in Pottsville — he won handily for the Reading, against its rival Pennsylvania Railroad, before the state Supreme Court, " bolster his points with legal citations, classical quotations, humorous stories, and even a toy train.

When Smith was unable to return for the next board election in January 1870, Gowen was elected president in his own right, a position he would occupy for more than a decade.

In October 2006, at Bound For Glory, Gowen returned to TNA during the Kevin Nash X-Division Open Battle Royal Gauntlet match as the sixth entrant, but was eliminated by Johnny Devine.

It was during this Shamokin period that Gowen met and courted his future wife, Esther Brisben ( sometimes spelled Brisbane ) of Sunbury.

Leaving Pottsville behind, Gowen sold his home to George DeBenneville Keim, a fellow attorney and close personal friend, who was to figure significantly during Gowen's future presidency of the railroad.

Another notable instance was during the run up to the Reading's May 1880 bankruptcy: in March Gowen was in Harrisburg prosecuting bribery cases on behalf of the state of Pennsylvania, growing out of the state's Railroad Riots Act investigations, and from Gowen's perspective an extension of his ongoing legal wranglings against the allied activities of the Pennsylvania Railroad and Standard Oil.

Every aspect of the Railroad's existence was to be enervated and agitated and sometimes turned topsy-turvy during the Gowen years of the 1870s and 1880s.

Originally formed in 1994 as an octet ( under the name Galactic Prophylactic ) and including singer Chris Lane and guitarist Rob Gowen, the group was soon pared down to a sextet of: guitarist Jeff Raines, bassist Robert Mercurio, drummer Stanton Moore, Hammond organist Rich Vogel, Theryl DeClouet on vocals, and later adding saxophonist Ben Ellman.

Gowen came under attack again, this time charged before stockholders of accounting sleight of hand — of cloaking continuous losses in the Coal & Iron Co. by infusing into that subsidiary as " capital investment " funds borrowed by the parent railroad, only to mysteriously shuffle large portions of that " investment " back to the parent to cover high dividends paid to railroad shareholders.
