On May 18, 1954 Greensboro became the first city in the South to publicly announce that it would abide by the U. S. Supreme Court ’ s Brown v. Board of Education ruling which declared racial segregation in the nation ’ s public schools unconstitutional.

Greensboro is served by Piedmont Triad International Airport, which also serves the nearby cities of High Point and Winston-Salem as well as the surrounding Piedmont Triad metropolitan region.

The Greensboro Transit Authority offers public bus service throughout the city, including a service called Higher Education Area Transit, or HEAT, which links downtown attractions to area colleges and universities.

U. S. Highway 29 --- which travels through the southern, eastern and northern sections of the city before heading northeast toward suburban Reidsville — is a major route in Greensboro and offers freeway access to the more urban and central areas of the city.

From February to Mid September 2008 I-40 was moved to a new alignment south of Greensboro, which also carries the new I-85 bypass and will eventually carry Interstate 73 as well, while the old I-40 through Greensboro became a second I-40 freeway Business Loop.

The county served as the location for the Searcy & Moore gun factory, which was located at Hogans Creek, a small village located some 20 miles northwest of Greensboro.

When WAGA-TV in Atlanta ( which signed on four months before WBTV ) switched to Fox in 1994, WBTV became the longest-tenured CBS affiliate south of Washington, D. C. WFMY-TV in Greensboro, the second-oldest station in the Carolinas ( which signed on three months after WBTV ), is also second in this category.

For the first year of the talk format, WXKS branded as " Rush Radio 1200 ", which was named for Limbaugh ( Clear Channel has also used this branding at WRNO-FM in New Orleans, WRDU in Raleigh-Durham, and WPTI in Greensboro, North Carolina ); on February 28, 2011, the station dropped the " Rush Radio " name and began calling itself simply " Talk 1200 Boston ".

From Greensboro, North Carolina to Tuskegee, Alabama, Interstate 85 ( I-85 ) runs parallel with US 29, which along that stretch, serves primarily as a local route.
