In September 2011 Grinspoon announced on their website that they are writing and recording their seventh studio album.

The annual festival has also been a launching platform for many Australian artists, with various acts performing on the tour multiple times, such as Silverchair, Powderfinger, You Am I, The Living End, Jebediah, Grinspoon, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Kisschasy, and Wolfmother.

Since the mid 1990s a string of successful alternative Australian acts have emerged ; artists to achieve both underground ( critical ) and mainstream ( commercial ) success include You Am I, Grinspoon, Powderfinger and Jet.

Whilst in US touring for ten months as support act for Creed, Lit, Godsmack and Anthrax, Grinspoon released a six track EP, Pushing Buttons, for their Australian market in September 1998.

Grinspoon had built a strong local following after their rise, they were regulars at Australian music festivals.

Pat performed at the 2004 ARIA awards, and Waveaid, as part of the supergroup The Wrights, featuring members of other Australian rock bands, Jet, The Living End, Powderfinger, Grinspoon, Spiderbait, You Am I & The Pictures.

In 1998 the Australian rock band Grinspoon filmed a video for their song " Just Ace " on the station's platforms.

Cog supported Australian rock group Grinspoon at the Adelaide race event Clipsal 500 and appeared at the Rock-It Festival in Perth on 19 March with Silverchair, Grinspoon, and Shihad amongst others.

Kemstar played guitar with the Australian supergroup The Jack ( with members of You Am I, Grinspoon, The Living End, Spiderbait, and Sender ) for the Thunderstruck soundtrack, performing on the songs " Crash & Burn " and " It's a Long Way to the Top ( If You Wanna Rock ' n ' Roll )".

Grinspoon changed their sound to more mainstream rock by their 2002 album, New Detention, gaining fans and peaking at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Charts ; similarly 2007's Alibis & Other Lies also reached No. 2.

The song " Don't Change " has been covered by The Audreys, The Bravery, Everclear, Face to Face, Goo Goo Dolls, Grinspoon, Zero ( a post-punk band from Uruguay covered the song with the title No cambies ), and as a bonus track on American rock group A Fire Inside's 2006 album Decemberunderground.

Grinspoon recorded The Easybeats ' track " St. Louis " for a tribute album, Easy Fever: A Tribute to The Easybeats and Stevie Wright — released in October 2008 — while Jamieson's duet with The Wrights on " Evie part 3: I'm Losing You " from 2005 was included.

On 6 November, Grinspoon played live on Triple J radio and confirmed that " Summer " was the second single from the album.

All effort was made to reinstate the appropriate and acceptable standard of stage production levels to the Main Stage area without success, prompting festival organisers arranging to re-locate the four remaining main stage headline acts for the night from the Main Stage to the Pharaoh ’ s Annex tent ( Empire Of The Sun ; Grinspoon ; The Butterfly Effect ; & Van She ).

In 1990 Dr. Grinspoon won the Alfred R. Lindesmith Award for Achievement in the Field of Scholarship from the Drug Policy Foundation.

Grinspoon discussed the way marijuana helped his young son while he was dying from leukemia in the 1970s, completely eliminating the horrible nausea and vomiting he experienced after each of his chemotherapy treatments and, thereby, making the final year and a half of the boy's life far more comfortable, for his son, and for Grinspoon and his wife by not having to endure the pain of witnessing their son suffer.

Similarly, David Grinspoon has suggested a " Living Worlds hypothesis " in which our understanding of what constitutes habitability cannot be separated from life already extant on a planet.

Grinspoon and Bakalar ( 1981 ) submitted: " Another lesson from psychedelic experience is the apparent inter-changeability of birth and death in the unconscious .. It may be that the fear of dying is in part a projected memory of birth and that what Freud called the death instinct is also related to a desire to return to the womb.

After a break to reconsider their direction and sound Grinspoon started recording their next album, New Detention, in Sydney's Festival Studios in September 2001 but prior to finishing the studios were shut down and so vocals and guitars were recorded in smaller studios.
