Groveland was originally a gold rush town and then became a sleepy farming community until the San Francisco Hetch Hetchy water project made it their headquarters and built a railroad yard and hospital for the work crews ( both now gone ).

From 1915 till 1935 Groveland was a boom town supporting seven hotels, 10, 000 residents and much activity.

Groveland was originally the East Parish of Bradford, which was originally part of the town of Rowley.

Groveland officially incorporated as a separate town on September 9, 1850.

In September 1639, the town incorporated, and included the territory now occupied by Rowley, Georgetown, Groveland, Boxford, and Bradford.

Thirty years later, thanks to the perseverance of Groveland residents and town officials, the town received the first of several state grants to restore Elm Park.
