The First and Second Maryland Cavalry, led by Baltimore County native and pre-war member of the Towson Horse Guards, Maj. Harry W. Gilmor, attacked strategic targets throughout Baltimore and Harford counties, including cutting telegraph wires along Harford Road, capturing two trains and a Union General, and destroying a railroad bridge in Joppa, Maryland.

The Irish Guards are known affectionately throughout the Army as " the Micks.

These Red Guards ended up having more power than the official military for a number of years and wreaked chaos and havoc throughout the country.

3rd Mechanised Corps ( later to become 8th Guards Mechanised Corps ) and 6th Tank Corps ( later to become 11th Guards Tank Corps ) joined it on formation, and served with the army throughout the war.

By the end of 13 June, the Knightsbridge box was virtually surrounded and it was abandoned by the Guards Brigade later that night.
