In Dresden on 18 June 1853 Albert married Princess Carola, daughter of Gustav, Prince of Vasa and granddaughter of Gustav IV Adolf, the second to last king of Sweden of the House of Holstein-Gottorp.

At the same time, Charles XIII is elected to succeed Gustav IV Adolf as King of Sweden.

He is succeeded by Gustav IV Adolf.

On the same day, Duke Charles ( uncle of the deposed king Gustav IV Adolf ) is elected King under the name Charles XIII.

* March 16 – King Gustav III of Sweden is shot in the back by Jacob Johan Anckarström at a midnight masquerade at the Royal Opera in Stockholm ; he lives until March 29, and is succeeded by Gustav IV Adolf.

After half a century of largely unrestricted parliamentary rule proved just as ruinous, King Gustav III seized back royal power in the coup d ' état of 1772, and later once again abolished the privy council under the Union and Security Act in 1789, which, in turn, was rendered void in 1809 when Gustav IV Adolf was deposed in a coup and the constitution of 1809 was put in its place.

This was followed by one of the most remarkable of his books, Geschichte der Leibeigenschaft in Pommern und Rügen ( Berlin, 1803 ), a history of serfdom in Pomerania and on Rügen, which was so convincing an indictment that King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden in 1806 abolished the evil.

On the assassination of Gustav III in 1792, Charles acted as regent of Sweden till 1796 on behalf of his nephew, King Gustav IV, who was a minor when his father was shot in the Stockholm opera.

On the coming of age of Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden in November 1796, the duke's regency ended.

In 1803, the Boheman affair caused a severe conflict between Gustav IV Adolf and the ducal couple.

In 1808, he was again chief commander during Gustav IV Adolf's stay in Finland.

On 13 March 1809, those who had dethroned Gustav IV Adolf appointed him regent, and he was finally elected king by the Riksdag of the Estates.

Historians of the late 18th and early 19th centuries viewed Charles ' death as the result of an aristocratic plot, and Gustav IV Adolf, the king who refused to settle with Napoleon Bonaparte despite the latter's superiority, " identified himself with Charles as the type of righteous man struggling with iniquity " ( Roberts ).

The Act was largely rolled back after King Gustav's coup d ' état in 1772, restored after the overthrowing of his son, Gustav IV of Sweden in 1809, and fully recognized with the abolishment of the king's pregorative to cancel licenses in the 1840s.

According to Ernst Wigforss, both Gustaf V and Prince Gustav Adolf attempted to persuade the Swedish Government to allow the Allies to transport troops through Sweden, though this was rejected by the Government because it was felt it would cause retributions from Germany.

It rejected nearly all the royal measures outright, or so modified them that Gustav himself withdrew them.

After Jena Napoleon attempted to win over Sweden, but Gustav rejected every overture.

The confederacy did not allow any foreign army to cross its territory: the alpine passes remained closed for Spain, just as an alliance offer of the Swedish King Gustav Adolph was rejected.

However, the post-war government of Gustav Stresemann mostly rejected the pleas as there were many more Germans in Poland than Poles in Germany, and such a tit-for-tat tactics would harm the German side more.

The Weimar Republic under Friedrich Ebert violently suppressed workers ' uprisings with the help of Gustav Noske and Reichswehr General Groener, and tolerated the paramilitary Freikorps forming all across Germany.

The real U-571, captained by Oberleutnant zur See Gustav Lüssow, was lost with all hands on 28 January 1944, west of Ireland.

This strategy was successful regarding all men but Gustav, who stayed loyal to the Sture party.

When an old bishop died in 1554, Gustav Vasa had Agricola consecrated as the ordinarius of Turku parish – for all practical purposes Bishop of Turku and by extension the first Lutheran bishop for all Finland.

Referring to the treaties of 1780 and 1800, the emperor demanded that Gustav Adolf close the Baltic Sea to all foreign warships.
