Former submarine bases include DORA 1, HMAS Platypus, Naval Submarine Base Bangor ( now part of Naval Base Kitsap ), Mare Island Naval Shipyard ( a nuclear-capable base ), Ordnance Island in Bermuda during World War II, and the formerly-classified Soviet base at Balaklava in the now Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
The suburb is also home to the now unused Schofields Aerodrome and HMAS Nirimba.

Despite their speed advantage, the Italian cruisers failed to outrun HMAS Sydney because the most obvious route of escape to the south was to be changed to south-southwest, in order to avoid being trapped between the enemy and the shores of Crete.
One of the most notable examples was in World War II when the German commerce raider Kormoran, disguised as a Dutch merchant ship, surprised and sank the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney in 1941, causing the greatest recorded loss of life on an Australian warship.
Throughout World War II this was common practice and perhaps one of the most famous examples of this was during the Battle of the Sunda Strait, when HMAS Perth ( I ) was in action against superior Japanese forces with the USS Houston.

Voyager Point takes its name from the commemorative park which was established following the loss of HMAS Voyager with the loss of 82 lives after the destroyer collided with the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne in February 1964.
