From September 1991, Canning Vale operated as a maximum-security prison until, in 2000, it merged with the CW Campbell Remand Centre and became Hakea Prison.

The western edge of the suburb, contained within a nature reserve, is the Hakea Prison complex.

In open woodland there is Acacia leprosa, Acacia myrtifolia, Acacia mucronata, Acacia stricta, Allocasuarina paludosa, Goodia lotifolia and the more rarer fire dependent plants Hakea ulicina, Hakea nodosa and Banksia marginata and Banksia spinulosa.

Hakea ( Hakea ) is a genus of 149 species of shrubs and small trees in the Proteaceae, native to Australia.

It is now beginning to become accepted that Grevillea is paraphyletic with respect to Hakea.

It is likely, therefore, that Hakea may soon be transferred into Grevillea.

All newly-sentenced prisoners are assessed at Hakea before being placed at other Western Australian prisons and due to the stress that can be felt by new arrivals, Hakea has specialist management for inmates.

Some of the spectacular wildflowers that can be found within the park include rare species such as Hakea flabellifolia, Strangea cynanchicarpa and Eucalyptus pendens.

Wildflowers bloom in spring lasting until October and species such as Blue China Orchid, Diuris corybosa, Hakea laurina, Thysanotus Sparteus and Thelymitra macrophylla are represented within the park.

Rare or threatened species include the Mount Lesueur Grevillea, Forrest's Wattle, the Lesueur Hakea and the Laterite Mallee.

Closely related to the genus Hakea, the genus gives its name to the subfamily Grevilleoideae.

Hakea manages prisoners in custody to appear in court, or those who have just been sentenced.

Hakeas are named after Baron Christian Ludwig von Hake, the 18th century German patron of botany, following Heinrich Schrader's description of Hakea teretifolia in 1797.

On 1 August 2010, a meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Brazil placed Fremantle Prison and 10 other " Australian Convict Sites " on the World Heritage List-making it the first built environment in Western Australia to be bestowed this honour.
