Half Dome, Yosemite, a classic granite dome and popular rock climbing destination

A well-known result of this process is Half Dome, located in Yosemite Valley.

The valley is about long and up to a mile deep, surrounded by high granite summits such as Half Dome and El Capitan, and densely forested with pines.

Between them both, at the eastern end of the valley, is Half Dome, the most famous and most recognizable natural feature in the Sierra Nevada.

Above and to the northeast of Half Dome is Cloud's Rest ; at 9926 feet ( 3025 m ), the highest point around Yosemite Valley.

Tenaya Creek flows southwest from Tenaya Lake and down Tenaya Canyon, finally flowing between Half Dome and North Dome before joining the Merced River.

The youngest Yosemite Valley pluton is the 87 million year old Half Dome granodiorite, which makes up most of the rock at Glacier Point, the Royal Arches, and its namesake, Half Dome.

Their glaciers were huge and covered nearly all the landmarks around Yosemite Valley except Half Dome, Eagle Peak, Sentinel Dome, and the top of El Capitan.

The parallel Tenaya Canyon and Little Yosemite Canyon glaciers were, at their largest, 2, 000 feet ( 600 m ) deep where they flowed into the Yosemite Valley near the base of Half Dome.

They also formed Cloud's Rest behind Half Dome as an arête.

Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, located in northeastern Mariposa County, California, at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley — possibly Yosemite's most familiar rock formation.

Half Dome is nearly as whole as it ever was.

From Washburn Point, Half Dome can be seen as a thin ridge of rock oriented northeast-southwest, with its southeast side almost as steep as its northwest side except for the very top.

Half Dome was originally called " Tis-sa-ack ," meaning Cleft Rock in the language of the local Native Americans.

Large, relatively unjointed volumes of granite form domes such as Half Dome and monoliths like the 3604 feet ( 1098 m ) high El Capitan.

# Most plentiful are rounded boulders and cobbles and angular fragments, all deeply weathered, of Half Dome quartz monzonite, the light-colored granite of which not only Half Dome, but all of the Little Yosemite and its surrounding heights are composed.

The ultimate result of this process is a rounded boulder or a dome monolith such as the rounded back of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park.

The trail climbs past Vernal and Nevada Falls, then continues into Little Yosemite Valley, then north to the base of the northeast ridge of Half Dome itself.

From its northern terminus in Yosemite Valley, the trail runs northeast, passing south of Half Dome and then on to Tuolumne Meadows.

In addition, in Yosemite hikers face competition with other backpackers simply wanting to camp overnight while hiking Half Dome or to Tuolumne Meadows.
